I wouldn't call it "sudden." I think there was an entire storyline to it, anyway i dont think she's a lesbian as to opposed to her being bi, cause if you remember she was hooked up with Oz the werewolf earlier on in the series... buffy and willow used the escesnce of the slayer's scythe and turned all the potentials into slayers. then fought all the turok hans till spike's medalion brough sunshine into the hellmouth killing all the turok hans and himeself. they rode a bus out of sunnydale just at it got sucked up and all thats left of sunnydale is a huge crater all the up to the state line
