 Does anyone know of any really good ways to advertise? I've tried several things, but I'd like to hear some ideas from other board members. Thanks! ^_^

 Well, the directory is a good place to start!

There's also forums that let you advertise. You can affiliate with other forums, or just tell people about it. you'll want to check the rules, PM advertising is illegal on some forums.

 One way I find works is open an advertising fourm on your board, and make a small set of rules, like the board advertised must allow an ad for you board to be placed on their board to place one on yours.

I pat your back, you pat mine kinda deal.

 Well the current board im helping grew fast from word of mouth, and thats how "I" end up at boards in the end anyways. I dont use search engines to find a board, i dont use the board directory, i only go if i know someone there and/or if someone requested that i try it out.

I would just do 3 things.

[1]Word of mouth. After you have friends and your freind's freinds, when random people view your board, they will want to join seeing its an active community.

[2] Theme. Your gonna need something on your board that everybody wants, no matter how many people have it. As 1 person is different than another, each board no matter how simular the theme will always act differently. Star it on something people want to talk about, or hear about (usually popular things as games, consoles, debates). You can also do your board as something interactive (role play, RPG based, arcade, skinning).

[3] Affiliation. Affiliate to where people notice. If i placed a link to my board on this board (which is quite a huge board), not many people are going to notice it, for this is not a place to just "look for other boards" but infact enjoy the one your on right now. A smart decision would be advertising on a website simular to your board. (Ex: Squaresoft.com lets you affiliate your Squaresoft dicussion based board). It makes a win-win situation. You win for people who want to conversate about squaresoft can do so from their site, and people who want to get updates from squaresoft can do so from your site.

Yes, I remember the very first time I looked at invisionfree, I went to the directory, and was astonished :o that there was no searching service when there were thousands of boards present.
