Chemistry; discussion

I just thought I'd start a topic for the purpose of chemistry based destruction. As my professor put it, "Chemistry is fun."

Now I can say that I know what O3 does to help protect us from UV radiation. It doesn't block it exactly. What O3 does is absorb it.

Once it absorbs the UV radiation, it breaks down according to the below formula...
O3 --> O2 + O

Then the two high energy products will recombine, releasing the photon that was absorbed.
O2 + O --> O3

The UV radiation is initially coming directly at the planet, but when it is released it goes off in a random direction. This greatly reduces the amount reaching the Earth's surface.

The reason why freon 12 (CF2Cl2) isn't manufactured any more is due to the problem that the Cl causes.

Cl + O3 --> ClO + O2

ClO + O --> Cl + O2

As you can see, ClO removes the O atom, preventing it from reforming O3. The Cl atom removes the O3, preventing it from absorbing UV radiation. If you look at the formulas, you will note that both O and O3 are removed by being converted to O2. The end result of what its doing is basically pulling an O atom off of O3 and sticking it on to another O, which forms 3 O2 when the other O2 molecule is considered that was created in the formation of the O atom. The resulting 3 O2 molecules are basically stuck that way unless they can react with another O atom to reform O3. In the meantime the Cl keeps converting to ClO and the ClO keeps converting to Cl, which mean that it can theoretically carry out this process indefinately. I think you can see the problem.

I'm not too good with my chemistry...I don't tihnk I see the problem yet. :/

The problem is that the Cl converts the ozone into oxygen molecules without creating the corresponding oxygen atoms. The ClO converts the oxygen atoms into oxygen molecules. For the oxygen molecules to convert back to ozone, they have to react with oxygen atoms.

What the Cl is doing overall is that it is reducing the amount of ozone and oxygen atoms and increasing the amount of oxygen molecules. That creates an abundance of oxygen molecules that don't have the corresponding oxygen atom to combine with to reform ozone.

This is a problem since ozone is needed to reduce the amount of UV radiation that makes it to Earth. The problem is worse when you consider the fact that Cl and ClO keep converting back and forth to one another every time they react with the oxygen atoms or the ozone molecules.

even though i'm in 8th grade science my science teacher taught us how to do systhesis, decomp, and single/double replacement.

about the oozone; if anyone ha(s)(d) seen the movie "the day after tommrow" you would know that the movie provides a good example of what could happen here if we don't fix the oozone; we get another ICE age. problem though is if we patch the oozone layer up; we could also have (a)nother ice age.

I know chemistry. I wouldn't say I love it but if it gets me an A. ;)

my dad is a chemical engineer... always wanted one of me and my two brothers to do something involving chemistry...

none of us did :P

i enjoyed chem, just wasn't really exceptionally good at it, and didn't compliment any of my other subjects :)

Here's an interesting little fact about water that I know. Pure water (as in deionized) will not conduct electricity at all. I'm curious if any one else here knew this.

No I didn't know that :-s

But it makes sense since OH is the charge in water and not H2O.

Did you know that water is most dense at 4 degrees celsius? So does this increase the current of electricity through it? .... I have no idea.

.... but what I do have is a toaster, a bathtub, and a mom that's cool with it!

I did not know that.
And probably won't know it again by the end of the hour. :lol:

I would assume so, since increasing the concentration of ions increases conductivity.
It might not be a very noticeable effect though, compared to simply dropping a single grain of salt in the water.

tell me more about chemistry! This is probably my favourite thread so far!

Here's one..... lemme think... did u know...

*flash-backs of first year chem profs ramblings*

OH! Did you know aspirin how it cures headaches? Well basically it just slightly burns your throat and stomach, not causing damage but just enough iritation so that your brain takes it's focus of the headache.

It's similar to you going to the doctor telling him that your elbow hurts, he smashes a hammer in your foot and says "Does your elbow hurt now?"

That's what my prof told me. And I believe him.

Sometimes I can't tell when you're joking or not. :lol:
The real way aspirin works can be found here. :P

I wasn't joking, my Chem Prof actually told me that story.

But here's a non-credible site that backs me up:
http://www.detailshere.com/howdoesaspirinwork.htm

let me find a credible one......

"Non-credible" is right. :lol:
Almost nothing on that page is correct.
I think the whole site is meant to be a joke.
I hope it is... :ermm:
Never trust a site with a cheesy, spinning clock cursor trail. :r

It's all lies.... this quote alone prooves it

Then as you are passing through the barbed wire fence to finally reach your truck, you shoot your toe off with the shotgun (the other foot of course). Are you now aware of the thorn? No. How about the hole in your foot from the rusty nail. I don't think so.

That's absolutely false, just because you suddenly become injured in one area of the body, dosent mean that the pain dissapears from the other, as i managed to bang up various areas of my body at once and guess what, they all hurt at the same time.
