Can someone breafly tell me what Apache is, I want to learn php but it says I need to "Install an Apache server on a Windows or Linux machine", what does that mean, I really wanna learn but I need someone to help me get started, I was also wondering if you can use Apache for the IF boards or if you have to make a site, im sorry if these questions sound stupid im really new to this, thanks for any help.

Well... I guess you could say that Apache is software that can turn your computer into a website. After you install Apache, anyone on the Internet should be able to open their web browser and type http://(your IP address) and see whatever webpages you have Apache configured to send back to them. You can download Apache here: http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi You'll probably want to choose the "Win32 Binary" version There's some info about using Apache on Windows here: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/windows.html After you have Apache installed, you can probably run the PHP installer thing again and I think it will detect Apache this time and automatically add PHP support to Apache. |

woah, what are you using php for? whatever it is i am sure that for a beginner there is no need to open your computer up as a server. there are plenty of hosts on the internet that have apache http://www.100webspace.com/ They provide free php enabled space on there server, and is relativly easy for the intemediate user. (warning this isn't no freewebs-style-on-a-plate-web-building-easy site, you need to know a few web basics) |

Sometimes it is useful to have a local server to test on. I started learning php using my computer as the server. Of course, only i could access it (firewall etc.) so there wasn't any worry of other people accessing things through my comp. |

Well, I was thinking what Rory said, I wanted to practice on my computer first, right now I only know html and a bit of Java script. I wanna practise first and I just made a site. |

Well, I can't think of too many differences or advantages to installing Apache and PHP after that VS. just using a webhost. I would just go with a webhost. I used a Webhost to learn PHP. The only disadvantage is that some features are turned off for security. Not many, though, especially on 100webspace it's pretty good. It's a good place to pick to learn it on. |

thing is, from the fact this person didn't know what apache was, i considered that to be at a level that didn't need a local host. local hosting then means setting up even more stuff, webhosts have it preinstalled and ready for use |
