The Scissorman Posts: 23 Group: Members Member #46,729 Joined: March 5, 2005	hello i have been having trouble with spammers who have been breaking forum rules then claiming that i have violated the 1946 human rights act by banning them, and saying they will report this on ther 'report abuse' thing on the main invision website... it's very irritating, they are making more accounts too that i have to delete, and are gennerally trying to get on my nerves... they are some annoying people that i know who are doing it cos they don't like me... foolish.. has anyone else had a problem with trouble makers

In fact, many ISPs have a section in their TOS that states if a user is banned from a message board, that account on the ISP may not be used to access the message board again. So they have no legal standing against you, and invisionfree will not come after you for banning them. Snice it is your fourm, and you have the right to ban anyone you wish.

Ban there IP 2. Set EMail Validation on 3. Set 1 EMail per member 4. If they have Dial-up or are using a Proxy, have more than 1 admin, 1 from the USA and one from England would cover most of the time so when one logs out the other logs in. 5. Make sure you tell members to ignor the spammer, they hate being ignored That sould help you out.

The Scissorman Posts: 23 Group: Members Member #46,729 Joined: March 5, 2005	thanks, i banned their accounts and everything, and just got them off my chatroom (they were arguing with me on that) which unfortunately is not properly linked to the forum... i have blocked some IP adresses too, but i now need to set up a moderation system for the freewebs 'webschat' that i have made a link to...

That is a MUST. Whatever you do, do not get mad at the spammers (well atleast dont show it in your posts) As soon as they start, respond with KINDNESS and give them a nice warning. Such as: "Please stop spamming, we all are friends on this site and I hope you'll be our friend too" This really discourages them because they thrive on people getting mad back. If they dont simply leave then, calmly hit the ban button. Not getting your dander up is essential.

.Supperiority ∆ Posts: 1,815 Group: Members Member #32,495 Joined: October 14, 2004	I had that problem too, when my board was just starting I got some spammer on there obviously trying to close my board (inapropriate content) luckily I had a moderator online so he deleted all of his topics and pm'd me the IP, so I banned his IP, email, and username- it seems to work because he never came back (maybe he got tired of spamming since it didnt show). I would sugest moderator preview of his posts, which might help you to stop him

Posts: 37,594 Group: Support Team Member #25,756 Joined: July 29, 2004	In addition to these other helpful suggestions, turn on Admin Validation for a little, this usually helps because you can weed out suspicious looking new users if you know what to look for. After a while the offending users usually get bored and give up.

Posts: 409 Group: Members Member #32,235 Joined: October 11, 2004	^ dont let guests post...definately on a skinning forum You can take the most common email they use (blah blah blah@hotmail.com) and ban that. "@hotmail.com" that will keep them off for a while as they run outta emails to use. then after they leave, take it off the ban list. Ive never had this problem, but ive had a threat* to do so, and since he already had 5 accounts on the board (his "friends"), i put *@hotmail.com on my ban list for a day.

Email validation helps, and so does IP banning, but if you do IP ban make sure you don't just select the IP they registered on, use a range with the last digits, I had a porn spammer whom I IP banned who just disconnected his internet and came back on with a renewed IP and started posting again.
