indeed. i bet it was only on for a couple of minutes, still they would have had lots of signups in that time alone

They are just providing invitations for random users on google. It is hit and miss :)

First invitations, now random signups, what next? lol.

If people know of this, they'd probably just stay there refeshing Google's homepage until they get a signup link. Unless they are using IP checking :/

Random things are quite common nowadays, especially with the major search engines. They usually test out new designs etc. to a random selection or users to ensure that there aren't any problems etc.

Google has done it a few times, and so have Yahoo i believe.
