Getting People to Visit Forums

 What I mean is not just bringing people to your site, but getting them to actually click on the inside of the forum.

This is the problem: Guests will see the interesting topics on the main page and visit them...but once people become accustomed to the forum...they'll sometimes see the same subjects on the main site and not bother clicking to go inside the forum anymore, anyone else have this problem?

Say someone posts a great new topic...but someone replies to an old one..people will only see the old one, on the main page and the new topic will be ignored for awhile. Maybe I'm being picky but it's something that's been on my mind...i've also had other members tell me that it sucks when a great thread is made but one of the more active members bumps a topic that no one cares about and it becomes displayed on the main.

I'm thinking of using a code that can get rid of the latest subject in the right hand column.. not the username and date..but just the latest subject...or one that gets rid of the entire right column. Anyone see any downfalls with that ?

 Why don't you say "no one can revive a topic that has been dead for more than a week" or two weeks. Also, you can remove topics and put them in an Archive sub-forum that you can make invisible, therefore the forum wouldn't lose numbers in the post count beside the latest updated topic. It's simple, yet effective. Also, you can have moderators close topics that are no longer of interest.

 I think closing topics after a week of inactivity, or even a year, is a bad idea, unless the topics are "dated", meaning something about a movie coming out soon or whatever, and removing them from member view is even worse.
It would be better if your members simply learned how the forum works and how to use it properly, but sometimes that's expecting too much. :r
Do you have some sort of information topic for new members?
If so, I'd put something in there suggesting that they should check out each forum that has posts newer than the last time they visited.
Getting rid of the last post info column might help too, but then people might rely on the forum icon states, and if they don't function properly, which they often don't, at least for me, people might think there are no new posts at all. :/

well the generous Stefan has granted my request to him and provided me with an amazing code that only gets rid of the post title not the date of the update or the name!!! :w00t:

So we have the update of the last post made and can see who's posted last....but members must navigate through the forum to reach the members, thus they may catch site of any topics that would've been looked over had i provided a direct link to the topic!

Thanks for the comments and analysis...... and thanks to stefan for the code.

I shall apply the code once my site goes on one of its more "less-active" states...b/c i think members would just feel inconvenienced iif i add the code all of a sudden...when i do i'll report the status
