We have begun to see a lot of account cracking on InvisionFree Support and other boards. This announcement is intended to help you understand how you can better protect yourself and your members. How can my account be cracked? While InvisionFree's servers are extremely secure, member accounts are always a weak point of entry. Your account can ONLY be cracked if someone is able to obtain access to your password, either by guessing it, stealing it, or using password recovery. In what ways can crackers NOT take over my board? It is impossible to crack InvisionFree's servers directly and obtain access in that manner. Also, "brute-force" cracking programs cannot be used to try thousands of passwords to find yours as we can detect this attack. Your forums cannot be DOS'ed or deleted or harmed in any way without access to YOUR account. What should I do to protect my member accounts? Use a good password. A good password contains at least 8 characters from at least 3 of the following sets:
Your password should never be a dictionary word, all numbers, or a pattern like "qwertyuiop". Protect your e-mail account. If your account is on a site like GMail or HotMail, it can be accessed by successfully answering your password recovery question. If your question is something like "what is my pet's name?" many people can easily find this information. A password recovery can then be instituted and your account is a goner. What should I do to protect my boards? Do the same things as you would to protect your member account. Additionally, don't use your root admin password as a password at any other board. If you visit a compromised board and log into it, the board owner might steal your password and use it. If a member joins your board and claims to be from InvisionFree Support and asks for ACP access, you should ban the member immediately and ban his IP, then open a support ticket asking for help. If the member really is from InvisionFree, he or she will ask for ACP access IN A TICKET or will admin him or herself. Oh no! My account got cracked! If your account got hacked here, it will be suspended until you contact us with proof of your identity and a statement of intent to secure your account. If your board was hacked, register a new board and open a support ticket explaining IN DETAIL what happened. We can repair the damage. We want your experience at InvisionFree to be both safe and secure. You can help us achieve these goals by maintaining security on your accounts. Just a reminder: "password" is not a good password. "12345" is not a good password. "qazwsxedc" is not a good password (pattern). "!r0ckj00n00b" is a VERY good password. |
