What does it mean? I am just curious. I had never really thought about the M before firearm names like M16, M14, M4, MP5, M24... Does anybody know? |

It most likely stands for "Military". The number following the "M" is the model number. In other words, "M16" would be "Military model 16". Might I suggest you ask R. Lee Ermey (Mail Call on The History Channel). By the way, R. Lee Ermey has his own website, http://www.rleeermey.net/ and message board. |

Don't think it's that. Since an M4 isn't 4 inches long  I would think its just model. But i think its the first letter of the first name of the person who started the M16 rifle |

Yep I know. Since he was implying that M-16 would mean the gun is 16 inches long, then an M-4 would be 4 inches. (Yes there is a gun that is called an M4) |

It means Military. The real name of the M-16 is the Armalite AR-15. However when the military adopts a weapon, it oft changes the name. Most nations do this. Canada puts "C" England put "L" or "LA" Germany puts "G" There are a few exceptions. Police units often keep the manufactuors name such as the H&K MP5 (Hecklar and Kloch machine pistol 5) and Russia uses the gun designer name AK or Kalasnikov. |
