"Here"; A minor rant, I suppose

 I'm a bit fed up with people who do this:

Please can people just, y'know, post something which makes a little more sense, eg

For such and such, [url=http://www.somesite.com]use Google![/url]


It only takes a few moments and makes those mysterious "here" links a thing of the past.

And don't tell me to look in the bottom of the browser to see where it goes, having the text represent where it goes just makes things so much easier.

 I'll admit to occasionally doing that... But the sentence sometimes gives context to the "here". For instance, if I said "You can find the topic in the Skinning Documentation here", you'd know I was talking about the topic. Sure, it could be reworded, but with the number of topics that I'm posting in, the way it comes out is just better than the way I want it.

Now, what I don't like are those URLs out of nowhere. Like this:

http://support.invisionfree.com/index.php?showtopic=128987

I sometimes encounter posts that only contain that. It's not really helpful because you have no idea what it is, or where it goes. It's just a link. But to where is anyones guess. At least with "here" you know you're going there. :D

It's efficient.
People should assume I know what I'm talking about and just click it without thinking twice. :phrank:
Otherwise, why give a link at all?
I could painstakingly describe how they could go about navigating to the proper page themselves, which I do sometimes, when it's something they need to do in the ACP and there's no topic in the documentation about it that I can just link them to and let them read it, but generally, that would take a lot of unnecessary time.

And I see no difference between:

Bad example?
Or am I missing something?
One, you click on the word "here", and the other, you click on the words "use Google!".

I do that a lot. :)

Ditto, "Fast Reply" is my friend & it's easier to add urls that way with Fast Reply. :)

 I suppose in the instance you're linking to google, typing 'google' instead of 'here' would make sense but like Merc said, sometimes the context is set up for 'here'.

And I've also done the whole single link thing. Saves time when there's no real answer required when it's already there. Like I may sometimes close a topic and link to the reason because I feel there's no point in stating it since as it's in a place anyone with common sense would have seen. :P

So I think there's a valid reason for using any of them. Besides, if you're linking to a topic it won't make any difference if you use 'here' or the topic title. :/

 Yeah, agreed that it is sometimes right to use "here", like, "See my latest graphic here", but people quite often just use here, or the thing I hate more than anything else, just posting an obvscure link like Merc said, ie

That's totally pointless.

 Sometimes that's all that's needed, espeically if you're linking to something that, say, explains a problem. Won't make any difference if you label it. :/

What's pointless is wasting time typing out a long answer if it already exists somewhere else, especially since the link might help them find answers to other questions they haven't even asked yet.
In my opinion, giving a link to existing information is far better than simply answering somebody's question on your own, and whether you label it "How to change your logo" or just put "link" or just http://support.invisionfree.com/index.php?showtopic=4922 is pretty irrelevant. :yes:

I agree with Phrank. If you are low on time, or do just not feel like copy and pasting a entire topic into another, simply link to it.
