Validation is a function where the new registered user needs to confirm his/her email before posting, so that they can't fake their email. |

There's also admin validation, where instead of getting an email to reply to, they have to be manually approved by an admin. The group does serve a purpose, mainly because you can set the permissions differently and give them some more access than guests would get, if you'd like. For instance, you could make it so guests couldn't even see any of your forums, or maybe just one where you explain what your forum is all about but they wouldn't be able to post in any. That would help keep spammers and other idiots from messing up your forum. Then, if you have admin validation on, once they've registered and are in the validating group, you can allow them to see and post in an introductions forum or applicants forum or whatever, and maybe state why they want to join your forum, where they heard about it, who they know that's already a member, etc. or just some general posting, so you can get an idea of what sort of person they are before making them a member. I'm sure there are other reasons, but I can't think of any at the moment. :unsure: |
