Not sure what you mean by that, but all current staff with the exception of brian and mez, were chosen by duffman and other staff after helping out in support or the community. They didn't just join and get promoted

He was "discovered" or "recruited" or whatever, by DuffMan, whereas many, if not most staff are suggested by other staff (not that DuffMan isn't staff, but you know what I mean) when DuffMan asks for their opinions, and Mez hadn't been helping out here before getting hired. Though DuffMan did ask for our opinions and approval on the matter. Bah! Yoda is teh fasterest1. Serves me right for doing 3 things at once.

Lightsup is Smith from The Matrix, reprpgrammed by Duffman, after stealing him from the Architect. Brian is Duff's brother, and owner of the IF portion of Area 51.
