Sure - if you post your information.  Short of that, not really. Mods and admins (but not members) can see your IP but if you're on a shared computer the only information that can be gained from a Whois search on the IP would be that of the computer owner but even then it's usually irrelevant and unimportant stuff. You have nothing to worry about.

When you register for a domain name (at least with Yahoo) you have to give your name, address etc. that can be found at Whois too. Does anyone know why they are legally entitled to keep a record? |

So if you break the law, they can sue your ass. Basically services require your details in order to ensure that if you do anything that is illegal, they can pass your details onto the courts or police or whoever depending on the situation. Not sure if they also have other reasons, can't think of any valid ones they could use. :huh: Cept maybe spamming your home?*Jay shrugs. That's the reason as far as I know. You'll usually find a section in one of their disclaimers that states if you do anything illegal or violate their TOS/TOU they may pass on your information to the law if required. |

Admins can pull up a lot more info. You can use www.statcounter.com and they pull up a load of info about you. where you live, IP address, ISP, what site you came from, browser, screen res E.T.C. |

That's all approximations though. There is no way to know for sure. A WHOIS on an IP Address will tell you what area the person is from, but that can be a radius of a couple hundred miles. I could get the IP address of anyone who visited my site. In fact, In some of the more advanced CMS type sites I've designed, I do. The IP Address doesn't really tell you much, other than the general area where you live, and the fact that you're computer actually exists.

! word. Proxy.... If you really want to avoid WHOIS but this usually means you have something to hide and it will get more unwanted attention of some webmasters. Btw If you dont want a company such as Yahoo giving you information out to anyone other than the authorities. You can in others words they cant sell your info. Look up the better business bereau when you get the chance |

Yahoo nor any legitimate company will 'sell' information - it's illegal. :mellow: And even a site that doesn't have your information can still track your ISP and contact them to find out who you are and then contact the authorities. Hiding isn't easy but then I'd think unless you plan to break the law it shouldn't be a worry to anyone. :huh: |

You'd be suprised what they get away with.. Yahoo wouldn't lol. And I always hide my info as best as I pssibly can. But I don't break the law. They do websites do they all do. How do you think you get spam mail? Those dont just come from porn sites. You know you get those boxes that do you wish to recieve email regarding promotions and offers etc leave it blank if you check the box they liscense that right away to other companies for a price.. All I am saying is that if you are worried about your info being shared or easily viewed there are ways to protect yourself. |

They're not illegally selling information though. If you tick the box, you grant them the right to pass your information to whoever they want to. If you get spammed for not unticking the box it's your own fault really.
Yes, it's called the data protection act, which all legal companies must obide by. B) Any who violate it are effectively breaking the law so you'd need to use a pretty dodgy company for your information to be passed in without permission. If you're asked to give personal details, you should check first that there's a tick box asking whether or not you wish the information to be passed on. Most decent companies have them. If they don't, check their disclaimers to see if they claim the right to pass on information. If they don't then you're fine otherwise don't use them. Proxies and whatnot are a way to protect you somewhat (though most of the best companies know how to get around them), but the greatest tool is common sense.

What worries me about this, is that anyone can find out my details. I didn't see anything at Whois that says you can hide your name, address and telephone number from anyone who is trying to access that information. In fact, I found the name and address and telephone number of a friends site very easily. So if I ban someone from my site, they get hacked off about, look me up and pay a little visit...... or worse, threaten to hurt my family because they now know where I live. Doesn't that scare anyone else? |
