 A very big loss, he will be missed dearly by many many watchers of the programme, family and friends! Watched the show a few times (I am from the UK) and he was very good at what he did, shame he had to die :(

Yeah, understandable too, it's like the end of an era. They were practically together for a lifetime. It's sad to think tomorrow will be the final show he recorded (it's Thursday now and it's being shown on Friday as far as I know). I wonder what they'll replace his slot with? Probably won't truly fill the gap though. :/

Probably with some young presenter who nobody likes. I imagine the show will slowly die from this point onwards.

 I don't think they'll bother with remaking it with another presenter. I bet Carol wouldn't be involved if they'd tried to since it's like trying to revive what Richard and her made it but with another person (which in my eyes seems a bit disrespectful towards his memory) but repeats of past series does sound like the kind of thing that normally happens. Won't hear me complaining to see him in his usual slot. ^_^

 Mmm, yeah, I'd love to see his first bunch of shows. ^_^ Then I could see if his jokes got worse as he went on or if he was always that bad. :P His terrible jokes were always something I liked about him, nobody could tell 'em like he could. :wub:

 I've still heard and seen countdown on for some strange reason, I think they've got a new presentor (god bless, he's only 61) or that they're just doing the pre-records.

 they have quite a few more to show of him whilst still alive but they have star presenters which were chosen to do it while he was in hospital. If they'll still be used now at all I dont know.

 Hmmm, kinda hope they don't bother with the guest presenters now since the last series he did is now coming to a close tomorrow and I'd certainly hope they don't bother with trying another series with a different presenter. I think it would ruin his legacy. :/

It's like Have I Got News For You, they've been using guest presenters for way too long now, sure some have been funny but I think they need a more perminant person to keep it stable. Some of the guest presenters on Countdown over the years when Richard wasn't available were good but to carry on with them to keep the show going...nah. :no: Sometimes, you have to let go of things. It's better to preserve his memory with repeats than trample on Countdown with guest presenters. Richard and Carol made Countdown what it was, there's no way they'd ever replace Richard. :/

I watched todays show, was kinda sad when he mentioned 'the next series', which he had no idea he'd never see. :(

 Just found out 'bout this today, been on holiday for a week. Couldn't believe it when my sis told me.

Countdown without him wouldn't be right. He was the "Countdown Man".

Obituary: Richard Whiteley

He said: "He'd had an operation, but this really is a shock. He'd seemed to be OK.

"Carol was told about his death by a member of his family."

Before presenting Countdown, Whiteley had been a familiar face on Yorkshire Television since the late 1960s.

Famous moments from his TV career included an on-screen attack by a ferret, and being broadcast in negative - with white hair and a black face.


Whiteley received an OBE last year

But he was also an incisive political reporter who was the first journalist to interview then prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, after the Brighton bombing in 1984.

Terry Wogan, fellow presenter and friend of Whiteley, said he was too upset to speak fully.

"I'm shocked. It's terrible new," the Radio 2 presenter said.

Last November Whiteley was honoured with an OBE from the Queen, who is said to be a Countdown fan, as was the late Queen Mother.

He leaves behind a partner of 11 years, Kathryn Apanowicz, who featured in Eastenders during the 1980s.

 A much respected journalist and the face of Countdown for 22 years. He was a Brit so Americans might not know him. :/
