Well, Yesterday after drinking some tea, I got the idea about making a RPG forum, Directly I took out some papers and wrote down what it´s going to include, But, I don´t have a name for it. I´m not so good at names, Specially not for RPG/Fantasy etc. So, Any tips?

It actually depends on what kind of RPG forum you want to set up..

Forgotten Worlds?
Realm Of Fantasy?

Just throwing some ideas.. :D

Well, It will have first a category with announcements and feedback, Then a category with profiles, guilds and shop, then there is a category with the towns etc.

I guess the name depends on how you intend it to be: Follow the trend of RPGs that basically suck (no offence but fact is, half the RPs - if I dare call them that - on IF are really badly done: crap characters, no backdrop and the admins make it up as they go along which sounds fine but I firmly believe a good RP needs to have a stem where the stories can spring from, not just any random crud that pops into the admins head when he feels like it) or create a truly unique RP that will bring in people who want to play and who bring another level of RPing to the game.

If it's the former, go with anything. Half of the RPs around here aren't even named right. Things like 'RPG Fantasty' and whatnot, names that don't even give a hint of the true game, timeset or anything. You could call it Piggles RPG and you'd get away with it.

If, however, you want to do the latter and create a unique and fun RP, I suggest you first sit down and write the backstory. Think of the name of the world, the place, the time, etc and then combine those aspects to create the name. It doesn't have to be hugely great (some of the most fantastic RPs I've ever seen that have truly class players have basic names though they at least have meaning) but it should be different and personally, if the RPG or RP are in it then you're setting yourself up for attracting the same old same old. :/ Could just be me but the RP I frequent (but no longer play) is a classy forum with intelligent people who write for the love of it. Top notch spelling, wonderful and uniqie storylines and characters who are thoroughly thought through. ^_^ Comparing that to ones with RP or RPG in their name (i.e. RPG Fantasy), well, they suck. The players are complete noobs who remain noobs (we all start out as a newbie but any decent player who wants to continue RPing should surely improve), the amount of swearing and profanity is rediculous (do people not know how to get through one post without cursing?) and generally characters don't seem to be thought through one bit. I remember viewing an RP once and the character started out as an orphan and suddenly he had a huge family that loved him dearly. I mean, RPs can be random (life isn't one way so neither should RPs be) but complete randomness with zero logic behid it just displays lack of thought and is the foundation of a bad player. Even a newbie can build their character.

Anyhoo, just to make it clear I'm not targetting anyone in particular or indeed all RPs on IF, just trying to steer you clear from becoming another drone of a colony of boring, yawnathons I've seen popping up lately. :/ So, to sum it up: Your name should be created by yourself through the collection of information regarding your RP (such as the history, the world, the location and so on). It can be as simple as 'The Legends of...' or 'Legacy of...' but it's what you place in those three dots that counts. But I repeat: steer clear from using RP, it simply suggests there is no backstory or even a simple plot to it, rather it is a place people go to post random stories about random people in random places that makes no sense...or spam to shorten it.

Very well said, Jay, since I completely agree that half the RPGs here at IF don't even deserve their own board. :/

The name should be one of the last things you worry about, since it comes as a result of what the RPG is, not the other way around. Get the story and battle system down first.

For $5, I can give you the patent list of names you can't use. :)

Think about what your RPG is about, and try and make a name relating to it. ^_^

Sure you wanted something with less detail, but:

Well I have been avoiding this topic for a while, but Jay's post forced me to a do a follow up post. Most Rp's on IF are crap.
Alot of Rp's are just randomly made. They have no reson for an exsitance. My rule of thumb is, if you can't make a ten page report on what the backround of the forum is then don't make it.
Now this dosn't mean you need a ten page story. This is just gonna' bore people, and detour novice uses (well sometimes that is good  :P ).
Generally I like to see a nice pare to two page back-story. Fill it full of details. Make it so when sombody creates a character that they can fell like part of this story, and adventure.
Another common mistake is that places require character descriptions to be 'validated'. This is a bad thing.
There is no reason that it should need to be validated. Just make a character, and play.
If you can't do that then you're in trouble. Now when it omes to names for the site be vauge, but orginal.
The past few I ran were (all decommision so names would do anything): True Hevan, Stiger, Last Elf (elf thing), and more recently Fate's Song©.
Note how names are not nessasarily the name of the world this is in. When you do names like that knowbody will rember the name.
s12.invisionfree.com/truygeski/index.php will be hard to rember, and alot of people don't use bookmarks.

My neck aches really bad so I will stop, but read my blurb with atroshsis spelling and learn  .

I've read your comments, And I totally understand what you're saying.

@Das Ein: I have the validation of profiles, But that is needed for certain reasons such as the newbies never follow the guidelines.

any chance of jays and das ein's posts being being merged and posted as an rpg guide maybe in the forum promotion forum? I'm sure lots of people would find it really useful and helpful. I did!
