 No, copyright is never needed but it is ideal to have it on the corner of your images or written into your skin (though I loathe skins that have them plastered on the top of your forum and not done as a note) just in case but as said before, anything you make is automatically copyrighted. As long as you can prove to us you own it there's no problem but that is where the © symbol comes in handy.

But no, it's not in anyway necessary as there are other ways to prove something is yours (such as the creation date) ans if you know them and understand them then the symbol becomes a little less useful. ^_^

The whole reason people use it is for proof, it's a major issue nowadays wiht regards to online designs in particular so I would advise it personally buy never feel it is your only hope to prevent theft, there are other ways which can be explained in many websites that explain about copyright. You're images or text or skins or whatever are automatically copyrighted upon creation but the symbol adds to the security and creates a safety net for most people.
