You are talking about the requesting forums. About this, go make your own graphixs and skins and waste your own time doing it. I mean it takes time to do that stuff and people don't even appreciate it. Sorry if I sound like a butt, im in a bad mood today. |

![]() I have to say I agree with Sparks on that. I've worked and been a member of several and the ignorance people display is completely and utterly diabolical. The creation of skins, graphics and whatnot is a service that requires skill and forums that have top quality skinners and graphic people well deserve to force people to have a set amount of posts as it prevents them being flooded with request after request. It doesn't stop rude and ignorant folk but with people like me who won't take crap around, it generally helps to stop most of them. Personally I'd just ban folk like that but I'm not as forgiving as most.
That I definately disagree with. I've never seen anyone from here banned because of the inability to find the rules. They are always clearly stated in either 1) the rules 2) pinned topics or 3) the writing above every single page in a forum. Now if anyone can actually claim they didn't spot any of those they are either stupid beyond belief or blind and thus shouldn't be on here or at least get better glasses. :/ The rules are pretty well organised around here, some things can be misinterperated (I probably spelled that wrong >_<) but usually only when the person has extremely different views on certain things. I've honestly never read any rule around here that didn't make any sense so I fail to understand how anyone who has read the rules, forum info at the top and pinned topics can not understand. Plus the staff have spelled it out to the point where they have to use big, bold letters and pretty colours to get through to the rule breakers. :/ Now those people shouldn't be here. And most aren't. ![]() I like PhranK's idea of having all the rules for every forum explained in one topic or area, doubt it would cut down on the crap significantly but at least when idiots complain they can add in another reason for their suspension/ban: "Well we explained it clearly in *here* and in the rules, pinned topics and above every area in each forum. You chose not to read any of those so it's your own fault." or maybe just "Owned."

Same here. I think splitting rules in to different topics like we have here is fine myself, and gets the more important rules across. I mean, if the Support Volunteers topic was actually in the board rules, noone would notice it. But as a pinned topic, it grabs your attention more. I think the rules here are organised quite alright. Basic rules are in the board rules, rules/guidelines for each forum are at the top as you enter, and additional things that need your attention are pinned at the top in each area. Keeping them all in one place would just mean you have tons and tons of stuff to read, and a lot of it might not even apply to what forum you intend to post in :/ |

Sorry you must've posted this in the wrong section (spam?). :/ I haven't requested anything here in this topic, but if you mean it as an opinion you may state that members need to make their own. Then again then would contradict the point of their forums. Please keep things relevant to the topic. @Fac3full I don't flame, I state things the way they are. I never flamed you.. do you see the ! at the end of my post? Your logic of flamming/opinions/whatever makes no sense please get your stuff togethor before you start making assumptions. Anyways I'm tired of the spammers and people with egos trying to create flames. No more spamming, the main topic are ideas to organize rules, not ways to get rid of them. Deleting the rules would be insufficient and I think everybody is clearly aware of the fact that rules are needed and how they got there. The discussion isn't about that though. The discussion is... there's single rules spread out everywhere and you have to go hunting in different topics everywhere before you learn the boundaries to posting. There are professional ways of using the language of English/Grammer to limit the unorganization of rules and make them more viewable and effective in forums. I'd give an example but this site disables links. |

people post links all the time so there shouldn't be a problem with that unless you're trying to link to a rival forum hoster. You can describe it though. I don't see a problem here though. The rules on top of the support forum and other forums here that offer support has to be there because lots of people don't bother to read pinned topics. This problem was evident even with the Support Volunteer topics posted by Jeremy and then Seth. So, if you're saying create a topic with the rules, I'm sure that has been tried but it isn't effective enough. |

http://www.rmxp.net/forums/index.php?showforum=4 Yeah but see how there isn't 3 different rule topics and junk up on the top? They have a board rules up there that's easy to see and it's organized. Something similar to that... maybe that can be a suggestion feature for a new release of IF. |

Its good to have logical rules, but have them layed out. If your board just has simple rules (and has a mature member base) its all good. If your forum is quite large, or has a childish member base, then more strict rules may be needed. |

well, in the support boards here, there are 4 pinned topics, with only 1 containing rules directed at those asking for support (Server topics). The Support Volunteers one only exists because of problems this board has had with spammers and bad support answers. Then there's the FAQ topic. Alot of what's there is also in the FAQ forum in the Documentation/Manual forum but it seems people forget to check there first. They also end up forgetting to check that pinned topic too. I'd probably prefer that the contents of that topic be transferred to the FAQ forum into individual topics for each question (if they aren't already there) and a link be posted on the top of the support forum directing users to that specific forum. Then there's the security forums topic which is more of a warning/notice to people to be careful with those who offer such services. So, really, the rules on top of the support forum are the only real rules for that forum. The forum you linked to has one big difference: We have 3,424 registered members vs. We have 31,529 registered members (here). |

Um, considering you spoke of people having to have certain amounts of posts to post in certain areas in your very first post I think he did keep on topic. If you don't want people to respond to things that aren't about this forum, don't post them. ![]()
Looking at the forum your directed us to, the rules are in the Forum Guidelines section like ours are, only they make them present here rather than linked to. If they rid of pinned topics here I'm willing to bet the forum would dip into chaos as yet more people would be confused. Forum Guidelines rarely ever change while topics make it easier for the staff to get extra rules across since only admins have access to changing the Guidelines. I doubt they want to add in things about Support Volunteers and Server Topics as it's already big enough, add in all the rules and it makes the board for hefty scrolling. Only link to it and people will probably ignore it, that's why having it open is better - people can't claim to have missed it. The Board Rules section is for board wide rules while pinned topics state the forum's individual rules. Can't be any simpler.
You don't have to troll through hundreds of topics just to find them, they are at the top in one or two threads. If that's hard to find the rules, which are also stated above every area in a forum, then such a person shouldn't be here. It takes crass stupidity to not be able to notice the pinned topics. :/ The layout right now is fine. Anyone willing to spend five minutes getting to know the forum can easily find the rules, whatsmore the rules are easy to understand. Really, it's impossible to miss them under "Important Topics". I can't see the real problem though, people who get punished and complain aren't being unfairly punished. They haven't been unable to find the rules just that they are too lazy to actually bother and check them out. I've read all the rules so why is it hard for anyone else? And remember I'm a grade A dipstick. Maybe it would be even easier if something like [RULES] was added in like the HOWTO: mark? I can't honestly see any solution cutting down a great deal on rule breaking and whatnot, it's generally down to laziness rather than poor display. Again, if I can find the rules that are clearly outlined in pinned topics and in Forum Guidelines then I see no reason why others can't. :/ |

Here's the pros and cons of the following ways to display rules Forum: Pros: all in one place. Easy to see. Cons: Rarely read. Think of how many never read the manual forum. That would be the same for rules. I know, I have a forum for all the rules.Useless in my opinion. Using the board rules section: Pros: First thing you'll notice. Hard to miss. Can still keep seperate rules for seperate forums. Cons: Way too much scrolling. What we have now: Pros: Out of the way. Not in your face. Easy to find as they are on the top of the forum. Forum Specific rules. Cons: Not read. Ignored. Too many pinned topics in some cases. |

Yes. I agree, I would also add that rules should be enforced with common sense, and punishments should be moderated based on the circumstances. For example, at my forum, if someone does something wrong, but has shown to be a good member in the past they will get off lightly. I think that these guidelines should be followed during forum management 1. Rules should only be enforced to maintain control over the forum for the intended use of the forum, and the well being of the forum's environment. 2. Rules should be applied using common sense. Unnecessary rules should be avoided. 3. If there are alternatives to using rules, then those alternatives should be used instead. 4. Punishments should be given out fairly, considering the personality and circumstances of the member. 5. Warnings and Punishments should be given in public if required, but should be given in a friendly way that shows the user they are respected. 6. Members shouldn't feel immediately threatened by the mods. They should feel mods and members are virtually the same. 7. During punishing, you should encourage the member to behave, rather than letting them or encouraging them to become worse. 8. There should always be a good reason for punishing members. It would be interesting to see what situations people can come up with that would cause these guidelines to fail. They are open for interpretation. |

Dude, You either didn't read the topic or have some comprehension issues or both. ![]() The first post should have let you know that the poster has no problem with the rules, but rather their organization. If you somehow misinterpreted that, as others somehow did, there have been several posts since then that clarified it.
