This topic is turning into a proboard vs. invisionfree vs. phpbb war.

:smiles and walks away:

Indeed it has. I originally just made this topic for a little "haha" but it ended up getting a lot of interesting posts IMO. Well I guess I'll leave my opinion on the current little board war seeing as I am a former user of all these hosts/software.

Proboards isn't even in the same league with IF or PHPBB. The freedom to customize the boards and the features they provide are, well, scarce. I was with them for 2 days before switching to IF.

InvisionFree Boards are feature rich and very customizable since they give the style sheet as a whole instead of the "fill in the blank" crap that Proboards provides. IF also offered the best support out of all of them and has a very dedicated service, but I wanted more customization and access to the PHP code which IF doesn't provide, so I then moved to PHPBB.

The way PHPBB is coded was apparently out of my league so I ended up downloading and installing mods created by others. I hated the ACP of the PHPBB and the look didn't have that same welcoming feel as the IF boards had. Also as stated above, they are unsecure. I recently checked their support forums and still see topics that say, "OMG I STILL GET TEH HA><ORS WITH TEH 2.0.11 WTF!!!!11"

So out of all three I thought IF was the best one.

The biggest problem we see nowadays with regards to growth, switching, and retention is thus: people believe that "paid" equals "better". We get a lot of tickets asking to be "upgraded" to Invision Power Board. When we explain that they're already running IPB, they often get confused. "But it's $180 for a license, we can't be running IPB!" Well, yes you are, and for the "price" of a small ad, you're getting it for free. What makes me smile the most is going to that person's IF board... with a nice news ticker, an attractive skin from the Skin Zone, and a lot of members and posts... and then visiting their "upgraded" "full" IPB a few months down the line, which is still using the default skin, no mods, and is pretty much dead. All that power does no good if you don't know how to use it.

"But I hate the URL!" Well, we listened to that and created the Domain Manager. You can use your own domain or subdomain and have a completely transparent hosting experience, and people will barely know that your board isn't hosted on your own server.

"It's not as customizable!" I would suggest that 90% of InvisionFree users would never use the ability to customize their board templates. That notwithstanding, we've listened to you guys too. We've kept a lot more of the customizability you see in 2.0, but reworked it to make it as easy to use as drag-and-drop, just like you've come to expect from InvisionFree. The skin CSS has been reworked to be less confusing, but more customizable.

No more pasting in large codes and hoping they work; you'll be able to pick codes and install or uninstall them with a few clicks. And with PHP mods that can take advantage of pulling data dynamically from your board's database, there's no limit to what you'll be able to do. We're unsure at this time how things will work, but we may be able to provide "hooks" into the board's db that you can use to create your own dynamic PHP mods. If not, rest assured that some of us on staff will be ready and willing to create some of these mods for you... those that the most people would find useful.

If IF gets really huge, we'll still be here. And boy, do we hope it does. I'm excited.

I can remember when server 2 was setup, and that wasnt that long ago, max 3 years. We are now on server 9!!!!

Acually, I grabbed on of the very first s2's, and I got it late 2003. :) Less than 3 years.

Wow, Seth! Sounds really great. I ended up switching my board to some other software, and two weeks later, out comes the Domain Manager. It sucked.

lol, IF2 sounds like those plug and play monitors. Looks like it's going to be real good. Can't wait!
Only worry is the period in which the old codes don't work and the time new versions come out, unless you're planning on releasing the codes of some of the more popular ones with the update?

I think you're thinking about s3. I thought it was s2 as well, but then I remembered I only arrived at InvisionFree when s2 was first opened.

You can actually make REALLY LONG URLs if you want to.

It's a great service for people who like to type.

For example try this long link (almost twice as large as it needs to be!) :

http://ww2.6URL.com/F98/MOUKPTMHQQWDPEYRARYWJPRULMBQDBCXVODC

How does Duffman make profit from this?

I think profit is made when people pay for ad-removal.

All of the money made by advertisments and ad-removal etc. goes back into InvisionFree.
