Are teen based programs getting out-of-hand? The Parental Television Council (PTC) is beginning to prove that channels such as MTV and related are starting to get to in depth, as it were, with their teen based television programs, music videos, and movies. The PTC goes on to say that MTV exposes teens to sex, drugs, foul language, and violence, overlooking the fact that in fall they had their one series (something Campaign; cannot remember what the actual show was called), trying to get teens into policits. MTV has also won many awards for its health shows.

But the PTC is going to take a stand. They are forming a petition to get MTV and related on a optional cable basis, meaning it would be like HBO and Cinemax. You'd have to pay to get the channel, giving the parents the option of whether or not they want tp have it.

The PTC is also going after channels like Fox, which has been showing The OC, a show the PTC says is based around sex, and they don't want their teens around that kind of material.

The PTC also states that with teens watching MTV and related, they are influenced to act like that they see on the tube. Now, anybody with half of a brain would know that television has nothing to do with the mental statue of a person, and teens should know the difference from right and wrong.

Now, who are you supporting? The PTC, trying to ban, as it were, MTV and related, or are you with the rest of us that say the PTC has no right in doing what it is, and MTV and related should stay the way they are?

If people don't want their teens viewing such things then don't own a TV. Last I checked, a person of sound mind isn't influenced by a bunch of silly actors with false accents and terrible hair cuts.

Why must parents insist on their children being sheltered from the real world? I can't see why Kylie Minogue would cause a cult of teens to break the law or how the OC is the be all and end all and thus must be followed like some TV bible. :/

If your teen is being influenced then perhaps they are not completely of sound mind. But there is a huge difference between copying someone's style and ripping the head off a dog. The former is something a lot of teens/kids do, it's normal. It's like saying seeing Die Hard will turn you intoa rootin' tootin' gun fanatic. It might, but not if you have free will and a somewhat normal functioning brain.

If my neice wants to watch music videos when she's older then who would I be to stop her? Now if she starts to carry sharp objects and mutters incantations I'll be worried but would that be the work of dark movies and swearing? Maybe but I refuse to believe she would, int hat instance, be completely sound of mind.
Of course I guess it could also be caused by me calling her mother a witch. :r

Teens mimick, it's normal, but I can't see why on earth why TV influences people to do crime or things they wouldn't normally do. Now if something was putting pressure on teens I'd understand hy parents want it removed (in spite of the fact it won't stop people doing it - like if your husband is going to cheat, he will, nothing will stop it) but making MTV and similar channels optional in order to reduce things like teen sex and violence is preposterous. Generally, teens who do silly things will do silly things, end of story. Unless you lock them up they will do it anyway, using the OC as an excuse for your teen's behaviour is poor parenting in my eye unless you can actually prove that their mind wasn't already contemplating an act claimed to be caused by it.

I'll support it. Every time I see Britney or Justin I feel like breaking something (usually my TV).

Those people that are concerned about MTV should buy this : http://www.fcc.gov/vchip/ (The V-Chip)

^^^ and taht should be given free to all TV customers, (in some cases I think it is)

I'll tell you who they should ban, the PTC.

These are the "people" that are making mostall of these complaints on tv shows currently.

Banning a group that protests?

Everyone should have the right to protest, I don't care how annoying they are.

instead of speandng hundreds on protest material simply buy a 20 dollar channle blocker at wally-world (wal-mart). Can't they tell there kids not to watch it? I know not to watch those shows because my parents taught me right, but maybe they need government help to raise their kids.

That list strangly reminds me of this odd show called Degrassi ... that alot of my friends are addicted to.

Degrassi is a Canadian show. How in the world can a Canadian show be bad is beyond the PTC, that's why they don't dare attack it... they know they'll be laughed out of the country..and Canada won't accept them :P

Twilight is upon me, and soon night must fall.

Having a sister who at 12 or so watching the music channels nonstop, I'd say mtv has gotten out of hand with certain things. Especially reality shows. Some of those bands are also really depressing. And disturbed. :/

MTV is certainly not Music Television, because practicly the only thing on their channels is shows. Not Music. :r

cut the bits that stood out. Surely you know how much everyone is affected by media? The stuff people in my high school talk about disturbs me. The stuff my sister watches is just inappropriate. I'm sorry a bunch of loud noise singing songs about suicide, and death. She's bought merchandise of these bands which consists of black t-shirts with images of the band that are odd sometimes disturbing. Especially the lyrics of songs.

A blast from the past.

I support the PTC to a dergree most kids how they act now a days at lease in my school shows that we did not come from monleys but mokeys came from us Im sorry to say but MTV is not even music any more of what Im agents. And the RTC is doing there job keeping the air ways clean from that junk they now show on MTV but a channle should not go paid olny for just one show. instaead there should be an option to block indivals shows (like what some Cable Compines have) olny be on every TV.

Documantarys regarding teens take up alot of the television broadcasting time nowadays, a while ago it was soaps and films, now its all about "chavs" "wreckheads" and "girls on the game" in all fairness it bores me to death, i dont watch programs about something that happens in everyday life, its annoying and discouraging. For instance the new tv program regarding chavs, whats all that about? girls and boys dressing in a sense that makes them happy..again very pointless. Then people phone up and complain about the importance of reputations and dilemas they are in, again regarding these chavs and other human categorys.

Its all very boring and should be broadcasted :P
