I thought we couldn't talk about gmail anymore.  Have the rules changed?

Discussing the service is slightly different from what was originally banned.

And people are getting mighty close to violating that.

Asking for Invites is not allowed here, so i'm going to go ahead and assume that posting that you have some, and for people to message you for them is also going to be against the rules.

If you have invites you want to give away, then just advertise that fact in your signature. I've seen various people doing that already.

So what's the fact here. I have GMail but I heard two contradictory statements.

One saying that you can get an account without an invite and another post saying you can. Have they opened it for a bit and then closed it?

Also I've been wondering is GMail going to cost anything when it is done with BETA.

Why do I still have invites if it's now public?

hope it doesn't cus they'll lose most of their clients. I don't need all that space that desperately. I'd be glad enough to live with yahoo's 200mb ( ) and my service provider email.
My guess is it's only Beta because they want to test the service with a limited number of users. The increases in invites the past few months probably mean they're close to opening up to the public....... or not.

I wondered the same thing about this topic. As far as I knew, you could only get an account via invite. Never heard or seen open registrations.

It's still invite only. I'm not sure if they opened for a short while or what but it's still closed. As for being paid, I think they will have a paid service but Gmail will probably remain free, or at least they say it will. :ermm:

I've been to the URL where you can sign up freely. I don't have it anymore so I don't know if it still works. :/

I don't get it, GMail's been out for ages and everyone has it (plus 50 invites each) yet it's still in Beta testing, and when you look at what features they're still working you can't hold back and ask, "What the heck are you waiting for and what's taking so long to complete it?!"

It's pointless to hold it Beta even if they aren't completed with it because everyone already has it. Just my 2 cents.

Perhaps it's more insurance than anything. Sure it's freely available to the public, but the "beta" sticker is warning that it is still in testing and people may encounter more problems before they release the official Gmail version.

Indeed.
Everybody having it just means they have lots of beta testers.
But, in reality, everybody doesn't have it.
In fact, most people still haven't even heard of it, believe it or not.
We're just geekier than most.
Even the least geeky of us.
Most "normal" people don't even use forums, much less operate their own, and most people have one email address, from Hotmail or whatever, or their ISP, and they're not particularly interested in getting a new one, no matter how good it's supposed to be.
