No, it really isn't. If that was the case we'd have a subject on it 8 times ever 10 sec.

Its a big deal because the gov't is (was) trying to take away the legal right of her husband as guardian. Its a big deal because congress and Jedby Bush, as well as GW tried to overstep their powers.

I find this rather amusing.
I'm not cold-hearted, but people die all the time, so I'm not going to beat around the bush here.
Her parents need to mind their own business.

She was a vegetable for 15 years, not thinking and apparently not even feeling pain.. basically just having a few physical reflex responses, which should have been enough for them to accept reality and do the right thing, but it wasn't.
Nor did it seem to matter to them that she'd told several people beforehand that she wouldn't want to be kept alive in such a situation, including her husband, who was the one with the legal right to make the decision, and who likely knew her much better than her parents did.

I'm sure all parents would like to think that they know their children better than anyone ever could, but that's a delusional fantasy, for the most part.
People lie to their parents or withhold information from them all the time, whether out of fear of punishment, or being ostracized, or causing them to worry, or just wanting them to be happy, or whatever.
I do it myself.

Any one of the half-dozen girls I've ever been seriously involved with has known far more about who I really am than my parents do or probably ever will.
I love my parents, but they're conservative Catholic republicans for a start, and anyone who knows me at all knows that's pretty much the exact opposite of me, so rather than have every interaction I ever have with them be a miserable bout of arguing, I don't tell them I think religion is the worst thing ever invented, or that I belong to a swingers club, or that I've done a few drugs, or all sorts of things.
They're not really devout or anything, but if they were, I might not tell them I'd want to be allowed to die, rather than be kept alive unnaturally for years on some stupid machine or by them having to feed me and wipe my ass 3 times a day for the rest of their lives.

Now her parents are saying she never would have wanted to be cremated because she was Catholic?
Do they think the husband is now making that up as well, to save a couple thousand dollars on a burial?
After all the bullmullet he's just been through, could even they think he'd be stupid enough to make it up?
Give me a break.
Either they didn't know their own daughter as well as they think they did, or they're being selfish/petty just to get what they want and/or spite the husband.

This topic was made long before she died. It was created March 21.

32 Death and 27 Life.

I feel sorry she had to spend her life like that. It sucks how she was in a Vegetive state where no pain was felt. She starved for 13(?) days was it? That is a whole lot of willpower. It kind of makes you wonder, if she was still able to talk, would she want to live or die?

As somebody already said, it had nothing to do with willpower, it simply took that long for her die because laying there doing absolutely nothing doesn't use much resources.
Rather like being in a meditative state.
If you can relax enough, you can hold your breath under water for several minutes, whereas if you were swimming, maybe only 30-40 seconds.
Animals reduce their heart rate, etc. to survive hibernation for several months without eating or drinking at all.

I don't really understand why it should be closed just because she died.
I guess if you go by the strict intent of the first post, which was merely a poll about whether she should live or die, then everything else is off-topic, but we aren't usually that anal about staying on-topic, as long as things are still relevant, unless the topic-starter requests the topic be closed.
Personally, I'd just as soon have anything about this case kept in this topic, as opposed to having a handful of new topics made to discuss each little part of it that people want to talk about. :/

I do say!

I understand some say death but starvation? Ok if you starve a stupid dog you get 7 years jail but a human money? And state to back you up?

This will not stop. Death sure if you voted that do you mean its ok to starve her?

If she was going to be killed do it humain way. Put her to sleep but dont starve her.

This is so sad and made me so mad.

I think I'm going to starve my pet. That's my right, after all. I am it's guardian. No more dog-food! The Government has NO RIGHT to stop me!

If your dog was braindead and had been for 15 years, I doubt the authorities would give a mullet, especially if the doctors recommended it.
Maybe you should try thinking up something a little more rational. :r

Notice in my first post that I said the same thing about starvation/dehydration being an inhumane way to go about it, but since then, I've informed myself a little more, and learned that expert doctors said with certainty, after repeated examinations, that she couldn't feel any pain or even discomfort

No pain + not being able to think or even have emotions = doesn't matter if you kill them with pills or beat them to death with a golf club, so removing her from any life support and letting her die like that is pretty much irrelevant, as far as the patient is concerned.
The parents might have felt bad about it, but the husband didn't seem concerned, unless I missed something, though the husband obviously felt bad about her being kept alive all this time, and the parents didn't seem concerned, so.. meh.

But you'd think they would have expedited it a bit, regardless, though we have jackasses unreasonably preventing people from doing that sort of thing as well, so the doctors probably didn't want to end up worrying about jail time like Jack Kevorkian, so she probably had to be left to die on her own like that for legal/insurance reasons due to previous people not minding their own business.

this is the kind of thing that makes me glad I'm not american...

I completely agree with Phrank on this (much to anyones surprice :P)

Keeping people alive under inhumane conditions against their own will does not strike me as being the right thing... ESPECIALLY when this woman had voiced her clear opinion before she turned into a vegetable.
Now I strongly believe that is it not up to 'society' or the state to determine who is fit to live or not. It must always be up to the individual person to decide for themselves. In many cases that person would not have a voice when passive euthanasia is considered and I can only imagine how tough a decision that mucst be for the loved ones...

I find it very sad that the same people that would not respect the wish of Terry Schiavo and her husband has no problem with the state killing off people in Iraq or anywhere else in the world... or even in the US:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article8359.htm

There is SO much hypocracy in this that I won't even begin...
I'll just say that personally I am glad she finally found peace.
