I was referring to them being seperate devices, I know that most now are DVD/CD Burners.

And a DVD-ROM is not a DVD burner, DVD-ROMs only play DVDs, they don't write on them, youll have to look for DVD-RW's RW standing for Read/Write. Like Peachy said, ROM is only Read Only Memory.

 You can have mixes.

I see 16X DVD/RW drives that are also 52x32x52x CD/RW drives as well.

DVD-R = read only drive
DVD/RW = read & rewrite DVD's & CD's


When you buy a DVD burner, be sure to get one that supports both +R/+RW as well as -R/-RW, or in other words, ±R/±RW. Ane be sure to buy one that supports dual layer burning. This allows a max of around ~11GB of data on 1 disc. (double sided, dual layer)

 a cd writer has only the capability to copy disks that are cd-r or cd-rw
however, a dvd writer has a different codec writer and lens, and so it can copy dvd-r or dvd-rw

if you use nero to burn a dvd, it may have to encode the disk depending on the type of codec on the disk and in the files you are burning

if i was to burn a 2gb film onto a 4.7gb disk, if it was to encode it, that would take upto a hour maximum, and about 20 mins to burn it

however, speed depends on your drive speed, how many applications are running(affects speed of burning and time of burning) and how fast your computer speeds are
