Well first I'm going to get hold of Ubuntu, then sort out the partitioning etc. Are there any good sites which help with things like partitioning... (not that I need any with Seth around. :luna:) |

The new Ubuntu has a partitioner, I think. I didn't have any trouble partitioning the drive. |

First time I used it I got scared because of the overdose of options. (And that was just some livedvd, so a real linux must have even more) But then I started just using it and it was nice ![]() (Now to get my own pc and really start using linux )

38 kb of 600 megs done! Don't worry it will speed up once it gets through the firewall, 2mb adsl should have it in no time...

Hmm, if you're going to try and repatition i'd recommend running CHKDSK in Windows first, if you have drive errors/bad sectors etc. that you know of. Otherwise it'll hate you and not repartition. And if CHKDSK hates you and won't fix drive errors, you're pretty much screwed I think (yeah, that's what's currently happened to me! :'( ).I think a live CD lets you reboot into Linux without having to install, if you can get it to work (because I sure can't). When you reboot again, Windows just works as normal. It doesn't change any files on your system basically. The install CD lets you install Ubuntu or whatever into your system permanently I probably got 99% of that wrong, but meh, i'm a total Linuxnoob *pokes Seth |

I think Seth is watching with amusement my attempts to get Linux working. Also, CHKDSK does hate me.

No your right. To get the live CD to work turn off the computer, then the second it gets power agian start rapidly tapping F2. You should be taken to a screen. One of the options there should say something like boot sequence. Go into that. Now make CD or Drive [insert whatever you CD drive is is here] the primaray (make it number one). Now turn off you computer again (making sure the CD is there) and when you restart without toching anything it should boot of the CD. If you need more help about knoppix pm me, I used knoppix for awhile.
Correct, but if you download QParted seperatly it is a little easier. Make sure you save both as .ISO and ISO burn them! |

I downloaded the install one, and burnt it to a disk, but it doesn't work, I'm not sure it's a .ISO file... Is this what I should have? *101 looks hopefully around for Seth. |
