yep....and its just sooo fun to ban thos guys. You have to make sure they dont get on your nerves tho, or they have won. You have to just make a fool of them by being nice but matter of fact: "well I banned u cuz you're being a absolute nut. Sorry you couldnt have been a good member" Then you let the rest of your members on the site chat about it for a week and close the topic. By then, every member has ridiculed that annoying member that just joined to cause trouble. |

I don't think suspending for negative days works anymore. We used to do that, but it seemed to stop working. 666 days is always good, or 1234.. whatever. But yeah, we get a lot of those type of people joining this site just to advertise. Guess they don't care, since they figure enough people will see their ad before they and it get deleted, but most people aren't going to even click on a link posted by some jerk like that, and if they do click, the chances of them joining are pretty low. Just a generally stupid idea all around. That said, we do get people who join and just don't bother to read any of the rules or anything, so they aren't deliberately trying to be jerks, but you can usually tell which ones are doing it out of ignorance. |

Also you may want to realize that the forum they are posting might not even be a forum that they like. This one guy is spamming my site everywhere, just so people won't even bother clicking it. The reason I am saying this is so that you don't go and chew out the admin. |

I had someone register on one of my test boards and advertise. I mean, didn't he notice there were only 4 members all with a similar name, plus no posts anywhere? |

Here's a sticky issue, though: one of my few (9) members (hey, quit laughing; my board's just over a week old! ) has a sister. Said sister logged in under this particular user's name, and proceeded to flame me rather nastily in her native tongue of Croatian. Unluckily for her, I found a couple of online dictionaries and translators and proceeded to tear her flame apart. :qb: I found out later that her sister (the one with the account) wasn't even in the room at the time . . . so I set her warn to 20% and put her in the mod queue for a couple of days. When the member found out what her sister had done she fell over herself PMing me to apologize . . . but what makes the whole thing really weird is the fact that this person's sister is also a member at another board, one at which I'm a Super Mod. I PMed the admin with links to the relevant post to let him know what went down and so he'd know to keep an eye out for flames . . . both his board and mine are pretty small - we share most members, in fact - and we all know each other, so I can't just ban the girl because her sister's a fiendish coward. it's just a weird situation. No other appropriate word for it I can think of. :/ EDIT: By "tear her flame apart" I mean that I picked it apart, together with a few possible translations, and gently but firmly told her not to pull any more such BS unless she wants to . . . uh, get her sister banned? I had to make a vague threat of unpleasant consequences because I couldn't really think of anything to do to her since she doesn't actually have an account and doesn't care much for her sister's membership. Putting her permanently in the mod queue is the only thing I could think of. And as to the original topic of this, if someone came on and started being aggressive I'd put 'em on the mod queue (depending on how aggressive they were being) to give them the chance to prove they're a nice member and don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers. If they didn't start playing nice, I'd banish them to forum never-never land. |

People shouldn't be allowing their accounts to be accessed, so I don't see mildly punishing the sister that was out of the room as any grave injustice. I'd tell her if she can't keep her sister and anyone else off her account, she might not have an account much longer or will be on permanent mod queue. Pretty much common sense to log out and not have it set to remember your password if you're using a shared computer or have nosey friends or relatives, isn't it? Personally, I hit the old Windows-key+L every time I leave my chair. |

My general rule is I set a post count you must have before advertising a forum if you dont have that post count your thread is deleted and you get a stern warning. But if you came on with only the intent of advertising and just ignored my rules and what my my site has to offer it's an automatic ban none of my members would miss people like that anyway. But most people understand and follow the rules so banning the knuckleheads that don't won't make anyone look bad IMO. But I usually always give people the chance to make me change my mind even on things like that and I always investigate so if i find out it really wasnt them that was breaking the rules I'll usually let them back on.

It happens everywhere, no need to ban or delete the guy. Just put your forum under new topic que, put a sticky up that says "your topic will be deleted if you dont have X posts, or blah blah ect.". If they dont read it, fine. I have guys who come to my forum, dont even read our advertising rules, and then put banners and links up in their sigs and posts everywhere -_-. |

I just learned something new. I live by myself -aside from a mother who couldn't get online with an instruction manual and a 1million dollar insintive- so that key isn't really needed. But even if you don't just logg out. It takes all of three seconds to log back in. |
