I was just wondering how helpful people thought affiliating was for getting new members.

Has affiliating with other boards brought you tons of new members? Is it overrated? What do you think?

Affiliates are great so long as the person you're affiliating with puts it in a place where everyone can see it without having to scroll down. Preferably the top of the page. o.O'

Ahh, Das beat me o.o'

If you think that if you go and affiliate with people, that all your members will go to those other boards?

I voted pointless. :eh: Done affiliation and gained a pain in the butt or two. They are rarely helpful unless you affiliate with a forum whos members would be interested in yours. A game forum would probably receive little to no members if it affiliated with a food forum or something.
Besides, affiliates tend to demand silly things. They think threatening to remove your affiliate is a good way of getting what they want but you'd have to be silly to do as they wish in order to keep your affiliation.
Never affiliate with a site that demands something you don't want.

Plus affiliates tend to look messy. One or two at the bottom is ok if they are relevant but a gazzillion flying past tends to look awful. An affiliate forum or advertising forum is nice and neat but anything else ends up looking messy and cluttered, even with marquee or however it's spelled. You might gain quite a few visitors but I've never seen a forum that's gained a lot of people through affiliation and that's kinda the whole point isn't it?
I'd say cut your losses and only affiliate with sites you feel would benefit your forum or your members rather than desperately trying to get memebrs by affiliating with just anyone. Likelyhood is you'll gain little that would benefit your forum. :/

well, affiliating can probably help in another area: search engines.

Quite a few search engines use as one of the ranking criterias if you have more or less sites linking to you so it always helps to get your site's link plastered around.

I too, think the marquee affiliates are a bit annoying. Once you get too many, it's rather pointless, especially for those who end up on the end of the line. Who's gonna wait for all the banners to float by? It also takes up alot of board wrappers after you have too many so it ends up being more advantagous creating a page on your forum with them all listed.

I find then somewhat helpful, however activity on my board has yet to boost due to it, but member count does indeed go up.

I said very helpful because they work on me. If not for affiliates I wouldn't have seen a ton of great forums. B)

I personally have never used affiliates before, as I believe them to be a massive waste of time that can clutter your board.

Also, there is an equal amount of chance that you will lose a member to one of your affiliates, as there is of a member joining fom another site. :/

I don't think I have once paid any real attention to theaffiliate bar on any forum.
