If it's going to be things like Harry Potter and stuff. They're very helpful. I have a board open for 2 weeks now - I've got 44 members and 1077 posts on the board. I am the admin for the board and I myself have got 269 posts. The next highest is 107 posts. So you can imagine how active those members are. It's simple, I got dotcom sites to affiliate me as well as other boards.

You got to remeber that geting people to link to your site, will increase your chances of getting a good ranking in the search engines....

Just for that, affiliating is worth while!

I would only affiliate to an equal-sized, related-themed, well-managed, active forum.
There are much better ways to get new members and boost traffic, like say finding related forums (must be big and active) and making frequent, intelligent posts there while advertising in your sig.
You must offer something(s) that people want, preferably something that hasnt been offered before.

I have quite a few affiliates, all of whom run the same kind of forum. I definitely find that it helps, as that seems to be how most new members see each forum. And no, I haven't lost any members to other forums.

Why? You can't really loose from it.

I have found it helps alot with me, as long as you choose the right kind of forums then you should be ok.

Im always up for swaping links with people as long as the topic of the forum isnt 10 miles from mine.

I think affiliation is helpful sometimes, but affiliating with a board that has the same subject as you could be pointless. They might just join up on theirs and not yours. It is really a gamble sometimes.
