Well I can't search on the forum so I have to make a new topic about this issue. Each one of us will come to a stage where we will need to permenantly ban a user because of whatever reason. But, how cool is it when they come back the next hours with an IP change. It's just absurd.. It would be great if you can change the banning controls to the ones more similar to PHP. Plus I hope someone responds to the message with a solution. Regards. |

Well, what I did when that happened on my forum was set it so new members have to be validated before they can begin posting. Sure, it'll discourage some people from registering, but that problem person will be one of them. |

I have tried that many times. That is just a random method. The PHP system is so perfect, if only it gets sorted here. What do the moderators - admins have to say? I'm sure many people have complained, can't this get sorted out? |

Maybe they just use dailup (or proxy). Dunno about other ISP's but mine does not allow you to go to a place you where banned from. (Not sure if they will enforce the rule, but the rule is there) Just send the ISP a mail about it, pretty sure they can block a website for one of there clients/customers. And you are the first complainer I've seen about this so far

I know lots of people get annoyed by people coming back and not being completly banned, but I don't really see what can be done about. Even if the PHP system is so perfect, then I'm sure it has it's faults. |

I have myself, and I have seen this time and time again, the only thing you can do is turn on validation. I'm not sure what kind of "PHP bans" you're talking about but they're all the same it goes by IP address. There are, with PHP, a couple of ideas that can be used still though with IPs to do things. Heres what I have done/others can do: 1.) If a banned user is banned, have something so if their IP is banned, it sets a cookie. Have something that checks for this cookie. Sure, they could dump their cookies. But it just makes it harder and more annoying. And the real stupid ones that you just need to get rid of... they probably won't be smart enough to know what happened. 2.) Go for the annoying route. This works, well, pretty well I have found it works better than regular ban. If you can't ban them don't try - BE ANNOYING. Use a code that will blast them with javascript alerts and pick an annoying MIDI to embed in the background. Even if they have dialup, you can catch them when they're on and they get hit. They will NEVER want to go back to your forum again. 3.) Go for a host ban. This is, last resort... I never used it because this bans innocent members, but this will keep them away. Note that yeah you're right you need PHP to do a host ban... not sure if it can be done on InvisionFree. |

But wouldn't that block new, "innocent", members from joining? I say if you need to ban a member, ban that e-mail address, ban everything that you can possibly get from their account. If you keep doing it, they'll eventually get fed up and just say it isn't worth it. |

Take their IP's and do this 127.0.0.* There is usually a set of 4 #'s in an IP. When you get to the last one, just put a * on it and it will be a wildcard. Since usually, dial-up users will end up with the same IP from the first 2 to 3 rows of #'s when they disconnect their modems. With this, I'm sure you can sacrifice a few thousand customers of that IP range (since this guy(s) annoys you enough that you want to ban them) Anyways, with some people saying how you're in danger of blocking out possible innocent members from going to your board...but really though, out of the thousands of customers to lets say....Earthlink, how many other people do you believe in that general area where the annoying user resides views YOUR forum? Not a lot. So I guess it's safe to say, you can take your chance with banning a range of IP's without really losing a lot of potential members. |

I've never heard of this PHP ban and I'm sure it doesn't exist. If someone gets IP banned, all they need to do is install a proxy on their computer. That would give them a new IP address. Really, it's the internet's fault. The system is implemented badly. There should be a better way, but there isn't. Maybe someday there will, but not now. |

I agree, and I've never heard of anyone being "banned forever" from a "PHP ban" either. And the 127.0.0.* trick works, but thats weak too. If you have an AOL user, you can't ban them even if you do use that, they can easily get a totally different one. Same with earthlink. Many dial up places give their users random IP address at times. |

There will be some improvements in the punishment system with IF 2.0, though I can't recall what they are offhand, but anybody with a decent idea of what they're doing can get around any sort of ban, whether it's IF, IPB, phpBB, vBulletin, whitehouse.gov, or China. Personally, I'm liking the "annoy them" idea, though you'd have to keep it within the TOS. I wonder if you could use some code to target them and crash just their browser or something? Fairly evil, but probably still ok. Though again, if they knew what they were doing, they could get around that. I've always thought that limiting the abilities and access of new members is one of the best ways to deal with troublemakers. Most people won't bother with wasting the time and effort necessary to fake being a decent person for as long as it would take for them to get promoted, or simply won't be able to pull it off if they try. And if they try for awhile and end up failing, most will give up, rather than practice. While some members might be put off by not being able to post in all the forums or use the PM system or whatever until they've passed the test, most shouldn't mind, especially if you properly explain the situation and reasoning behind it. If you combine that with an IP, email, and username ban, it really starts being too much of a pain in the butt for all but the most dedicated jerks, but even then, if your forum is moderated fairly well, the damage they could do would be minimal. It can actually become rather entertaining when you make them jump through so many hoops and for so long, only to end up banned and all their posts deleted shortly after they start causing trouble. |

Yes that is my favorite way too. If you turn off new registration, put them on mod que, and take away there pming abilities they always go away. Yes there could be a code like that, but the only way to do it with Javascript or HTML would not work on firefox well. So could we do that? *Das hopes Not if you hide yourself well enough |

I hadn't thought about that. I don't think it's against TOS. What I do is get a ripway account, and iframe the frame into the site. No one even knows its there. When a problem comes along (and I mean a REAL problem, where the person is just there to be annoying and doesn't want to reason) I add their IP and do the PHP to put up the Javascript alerts. It doesn't crash their browser, just sends a lot of annoying alerts. They can get by using Enter and turning off javascript, but I put down a lot of them and most people like that are too stupid to know how in the first place .
