It depends on his metabolism how much he will actually lose, but he'll probably end up gaining it back fast once he starts eatting again.

When you don't eat for a long period of time the body assumes you are in an area with a low food source. It doesn't know that you can just go to McDonalds any time you want and get something to eat. So when you start eatting again it will store as much fat as possible from what ever you ate. It's all part of the body's need to adapt and survive.

True. So after all that no eating, his subconcious will say: "We are out of Food! Oh no! Eat! EAT!!!!1111" and he can resist, until he can't resist anymore: or eat paper. A result of Anorexia.

yeah... not eating is not healthy, nor is it an effective way to loose weight. Plus you'll get tired and cranky.

If you want to loose weight you gotta eat sensibly and use your body. By sensible I don't mean skipping meals, in fact most experts recommends you eat 5-6 times a day. But you gotta eat food - bread, veggies, rice, fruit - REAL food not snacks.
If you fill youself with the right kind of food you'll feel good too... undereating, overeating, on-off dieting, slimfast, medicin and what have you will make you loose your own sense of what's good for you and make it even harder to keep you body fit and happy. So don't let your friend go there, it will more likely be the beginning of future weight problems, than an easy 7-day diet.

I'm not an advocate of no-fat or low-carb diets (even though if you have loose a lot of weight you might need a special diet in that period) and neither do I belive in painstaken workout classes. My point is if you haven't messed up your own sense of your body and how it's doing you will KNOW why you are gaining weight (or not loosing it):
Skipping breakfast and grabbing a donut before lunch? Fastfood for dinner? Drinking soda each day? Not walking to school? Sitting on your butt all day? Munching candy and chocolate each night infront of the TV? (guilty :$)
You don't have to be a doctor to figure it out, you just have to be honest to yourself and don't overcomplicate things. If it's too hard for you to figure out get a pice of paper and write down everything you eat, drink and how much you move for a week. And you'll probably be able to see what is wrong and how you can get rid of some of the snacks, candy and fastfood and replace them with some real food... and how you can get a little more natural exercise in a day, like walking instead of driving.

And the good thing about eating sensibly is that you don't have to become a fanatic... you can still grab a soda or have your saturday candy if you've filled your body with yummy and healthy things throughout the week. Plus good food tastes a lot better than McD crap :P

Sorry for the long rant, food is something I feel very passionately about
