I think the directory should be replaced with a forum here where you are allowed to place one advertising topic, and everything is listed by category and alphabetical order. No offense, but the directory is a piece of junk. If you were to simply have a forum here that replicated the directory, it would function much better, as it would be easier to navigate and much harder to cheat with and boost you forum to the top.

Just an idea.

But then I would call my forum something like this

AThe Last Lap

Because with the T, I'm at the bottom!

Oh, wow, you guys are right. >_<

I hadn't even thought of that!

Okay, so alphabetical order is a bad idea. A really bad idea.

However, I think the forum idea should still stick. :/

There is already a new board Directory coming out soon.

Well, no offense, but with all of the promises of "the shop is coming out soon," and "the search will be up soon," dragged out to eternity, this may be needed to fill in the time.

Around here, "soon" is anywhere from 30 seconds to five years, if you catch my drift.

The shop and search won't be out untill IF2 so how said they were coming soon? the board Directory is coming before IF2 as I understand.

Very well, point taken. But if what you say is true, then the board directory is not "coming soon," since IFv2 isn't. Therefore, something needs to fill the time gap.

Who knows.
But you should remove the directory link from your logo, your sig here, and anywhere else, as that's cheating. :r

Wait, it's cheating to link to your site through your directory link in your sig? Where does it say that? I just checked the TOS and looked through, maybe I didn't look hard enough but I didn't see anything not allowing or allowing people to link to their forums with their directory link.

How is it not cheating just because it doesn't specifically say not to do it in the TOS?
Whether it's actually a violation of the TOS is open to interpretation.
If nothing else, it could likely be deemed to violate rule 7:

7. You may not post harmful or disrupting html/javascript.

But whether it's a violation or not, it's obviously cheating and abuse of the directory feature.

I'm really tired of explaining this to people when it should be common sense, but here's a quote from me in another topic, which unfortunately was trashed for whatever reason, most likely because people were arguing instead of listening:

No, I meant "normal" usage not persisten clicking and reloading the page. ;)
For example, I woke up, made myself a morning coffee, and visiting my forum, instead of
http://something.somewhere.com/ I am typing board directory link, so it can count my hit.

Regards.

Yes, that is cheating.
You're deliberately skewing the board directory ranking by going to it instead of directly to your forum.
Whether you ask your members to do the same or not, if they do it out of anything but ignorance of the proper way to access your forum, they're cheating as well.

The board directory ranking is not a measure of the activity of your forum.
That's what your board stats are for.
The board directory ranking is a measure of the popularity of your forum within the board directory itself, or would be, if it wasn't for all the cheaters.
Doesn't make much sense to me, but that's how it's set up.
If it was a measure of your forum's activity, it would be be tied into your board stats and your ranking would increase or decrease accordingly whether anyone ever clicked on your directory link or not.

As it is, not everyone visits the directory at all, much less clicks the links to forums they already belong to, so for anyone to deliberately click the directory links to influence the ranking is completely unfair to those who don't.
The logical extension of this is that unless nobody clicks the link with the intent of influencing the rank, everybody has to, and since not everyone even knows about the situation, that's impossible.
And the extension of that already unfair scenario is that everyone who is intent on influencing their rank has to use a cheating script or have people sitting around clicking all day, because some people will be doing that, and if they don't also, they might as well not be clicking at all, as those who do will far outrank them.

Hopefully the new system will make more sense and be much more fair, but until then neither forum owners nor their members should be giving out directory links for others to click, whether on their forum or in their sig or anywhere else, whether they're asking people to click them or just making them available, nor should they be clicking the links themselves unless they happened to lose the forum url and need to find it through the directory.
Period.

I'll take it off of my subdomain redirect then right this minute then.

... *removed*

Now, I didn't see it as cheating.

Also, I didn't see how simply linking to it was disruptive in any way.

But since you say that the board directory isn't supposed to be your board stats, it's for popularity in the directory only, then it could be considered disruptive, so I'll remove it.

I actually too, thought it was okay to hand out the directory link.

I had no "disruptivie" intent when I did that or trying to "skew" the directory. and I would never have even thought to put what I just did under disruptive.. What I mean is, I wanted valid clicks and visits to my domain. I wasn't trying to "cheat." I also thought that others were allowed to do the same if they wished, since it didn't specifically state that you shouldn't be doing that. so I also thought I was playing fair. I figured if it has valid hits, and not cheats as in mass clicking on it, which is obvious cheating, it'd be OK. So I didn't interpret that as being "disruptive" at all. I hope you get what I mean, and sorry for any trouble.

I agree that the whole hits system should be changed to something else.
