However, on mine, I didn't do that, I had to enter something which I found by pressing one of the function keys... :r

This can work too, and if Kubuntu install doesn't have text mode, it's what he should do :yes:

We'll wait and see what he says when he comes back.

 I pressed F2 and now I am at this screen that says Prerequistions for installing Ubuntu. I don't see any text mode option.

 Try pressing the F keys, and then you'll see screens giving you help, one should say, for some video cards you may need to type in this : VGA=***, then it shows you what to type.

 Nope. None of those values work. All of them give me a black screen.

The Last text I see before it freezes up is"Attached scsi removable device sda at sci1, channel 0 , id 0 , lun 0"
