The great thing about copyrights is you don't have to do anything. Just make something and say it's copyrighted and it is. :)

Anything you make is automatically copyrighted to you. You can pay to get the legal recognised, but all this means is that if you have to goto court over a copyright dispute, you have clear evidence that it is copyrighted to you, and you do not have to go through a process of proving that you actually did create it.

Here is a website, that should give you more information and you can register your script or anything else here: http://www.copyright.gov/

They are.

Anyway, copyright is a complex issue.

People can use x many words from your creation without incurring copyright breakage, but there's a strict limit. And the copyright expires something like 50 years after you die :P

Why would you care. If the copyright is very valuable, then someone such as a company representative can always renew the copyright under your name to save the copyright. For example, if Bill Gates copyrighted the Start Menu system, then someone else from Microsoft can renew the copyright under his name, but since he is dead and since Bill Gates signed a contract with Microsoft that they can use his copyrighted stuff then Microsoft can still use it. I think it goes something like. Like you said its complex, but the expiration date is never really an issue.

Back to the point, I wouldn't waste money on getting something as simple as a code turned into a registered copyright. Especially being on line, makes it easy to prove that you were the first to come up with it. ;)

It's true; I made a RolePlaying board with a custom in depth battle system, and the admins of the site pulled together an awesome code for it. Just the fact tha you have created it and put it on the net makes it yours! ^_^

Be absolutely sure to specify that it is your copyright, however, or else someone might fall under the impression that they can use it and get in trouble for something they honestly didn't know it was wrong.

If you're going to do this, be sure you format your HTML properly...

Not totally true. It is legally yours from day one.
The only thing a copyright does is prove that you were the first to make it. If you can prove that you made whatever it is before whoever your having a dispute with than you really don't need a copyright.

No they would still need approval, you would just have to prove that you made it first if you wound up in court.
