Not totally true. It is legally yours from day one.
The only thing a copyright does is prove that you were the first to make it. If you can prove that you made whatever it is before whoever your having a dispute with than you really don't need a copyright.

If you read what i actually said (some horrible mistakes in there, i know... must have been tired or something), i pointed out that paying only means that when it comes to a court dispute, you have irrefutable proof that you are the copyright holder making the process very quick. Of course, you can prove this other ways, it just takes longer. Hence why people pay for copyrights.
