it just gives more of a chance of more members joining and not posting. so like 50 of your 75 members may have under 10 posts. |

Depends on the type of forum you have. I run an unnoficial school message board for the people who go to my school, and I only allow current and graduate students on the board. |

Yeah but if you have a public board, it is a cheap way, because if you dont force people to login, you will only get people registering that will post! |

People who force guests to login are just cheap people that don't pay attention to how to get members guides or they don't advertise. They just force guests to register so they have more members register so they won't have to use guides, or advertising. All that equals 2 words: Lazy people |

My board works like the mafia. Strictly private. You can join but only if you are invited by a member. The member who invites a new person also has to vouch for them, or else. <_< What is the point of having a board with 300 members and the total board posts are 5000 or something? It's just the same 10-20 people who do the majority of the posting anyway. At least that is my experience from various boards with a high member count. I've seen boards with over 300 members yet only 3000 total board posts......150 people don't have a single post and another 100 have only one post (to plug their own forum) to their name. Bugger that, I would delete all of those people. Boards with hundreds of members doesn't impress everyone, If you don't have a hundred thousand board posts to match, the place looks dead IMO. I have 25 registered members and total posts in our first year was 25,000 ..and everyone posts at least 1-10 times a day. :neo: |

It depends, saying that it is always a cheep way of getting members is untrue, because sometimes people just don't want so many geusts watching thier board without registering. I'm not going to vote either way. It can be argued just as well both ways. I have a board where people have to register to view the board, but also have to be validated by an admin (it's a private board) so that's different right? but you wouldn't know of that until you registered. Then again, for someone who dosn't register it would be viwed as a way to get members. Also, I don't think haveing geusts forced to login a way of gaining members, because I for one don't even register on a board I don't know much about. |

I personally, think that it's just stupid to sign-up at those boards. I mean, the chances of a board ending up good are slim if they force you to sign-up or log-in. On my board, most of the boards are viewable, except for the Writing boards where work goes because I want to lower the risk of plagarism for my member's work. |

I don't believe it's a cheap way to get members . I'm the leader of an alliance in a certain MMORPG and i have to use this option so non-members can't see my alliances activities. So when they join i just delete them rather than letting them see crucial information as guests

cheap. It's obvious some boards have to be like that cus it's a forum for team discussions for a certain game or it's a private group, etc. so their objective isn't to gain new members (the old fashioned way). But people who think they'll get many new Good members by forcing people to log in to view stuff are going about it the wrong way. More often then not, this strategy will blow up in your face. |

It really depends on the kind of board you have. I admin on 3 boards and own 2. One I let people see the forums without joining, but I block access to certain boards for guests to secret, member only info. My other board is completely closed off and I only let my friends join, basically I or my other admin have to Pre-Register everyone. I'm not voting. |
