What's all this 'downloading in the UK is legal' crap? :ermm: Because that's what it is. Sorry Stealth, but your friend is wrongly informed. :/ The only downloading that is allowed is the downloading of free programmes or things you have paid for and of course any music that is allowed to be downloaded by concent of the recording company (not the artist). It is not legal to download just anything in the UK that is copyrighted using warez. Never has been, never will be, it violates copyright laws. It's like saying it's fine to download pin numbers as long as you don't share them with anyone. Obviously uploading is also illegal, it's a bit of a given considering the download was illegal in the first place. >_< Only uploading things you own or created is allowed, or if you have written concent from the owner.

And even with music, unless the recording company actually concents to the dowloading of the music (regardless of the artist), it's still illegal. :/

Rory is right, uploading is far more chased than downloading but neither is legal, although I hear they are now cracking down on it too with hella high fines.

There are no hard and fast rules on downloading/uploading cos you can be American and downloading from a British site, what country's laws apply?

I would assume the country you are in, although I've heard sometimes they go with both and hand out the harsher punishment of the two. Not sure where America stands but I'd have thought the same laws apply (though they may be altered with different punishments)?

I don't live in the UK, but this person said it was legal, and I assume it's the same as canada.

A few posts back you said that you assumed Canada's laws were like the so called British laws and it was legal to download, but now you say that you assumed the British laws were like the Canadian laws!

Downloading is, indeed, illegal in England: http://www.managingip.com/?Page=10&PUBID=3...=472674&TYPE=20

As for Canada, seems it is legal but this is from 2003: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/business/legal/0,3...39118537,00.htm
something more recent: http://www.michaelgeist.ca/resc/html_bkup/june62005.html
