The point of the ads is that you see them. Otherwise they do nothing to make us any money. More money = more fun stuff for IF. |

If we were wanting to squeeze every last drop of money out of you we would: 1) Run "linkbot" :rolleyes: 2) Put popups in 3) Put in moving ads or flash ads 4) Put in multiple ads per page The fact is, there is one ad. And it is small. And it blends in with your board's layout so that it appears to be part of the board. And once again we have reached the same old points of going in circles with the same arguments. |

So following that line of thinking, is there anything in particular that IF is trying to get more money for? The old rate of income seemed to be enough for servers, so are there specific things that IF is wanting more money for that would require what this change will bring about? |

besides that, other services IF has looked into might come into play. This is just speculation but many have asked for web hosting, i imagine certain expenses would be added to have this type of service, hence a change. But really it could just be that this is a good place for the ads or the only place due to agreements with google. Again speculation. If enough people really are bothered with it, then it probably might change. But whose to say this will stay. There are always new kinds of ad testing going on. Duffman's goal is to still pay for IF and keep the ads as easy on the eyes as possible. Hence why most of the time they are just pure text ads. I personally couldn't care either way. It's just another addition to the bottom of the page. |

InvisionFree is supported by the ads. The earlier placement paid for the servers sometimes; sometimes it did not. There was one month when s9 went TERABYTES over its bandwidth allotment; at 50 cents a GB the additional cost was almost equal to the cost of another server. We try to keep a few months' cash in reserve as a rainy-day fund. IF cash does NOT go into DuffMan's pocket, it goes back into the IF coffers to improve things. You wouldn't have noticed, but the servers have been given upgrades from time to time to keep them running well as the number of users on them increases. If you haven't noticed, the mods and admins are volunteers. We've never given everyone a little something as a thank-you. We'd like to have the money to do that... if you approve and all. We would like to have some venture capital to try other services. Hosting has been mentioned. Blogs have been mentioned. Development is not free. We will always try to find the best balance between what keeps people happy and what keeps us afloat. Duff has said we will look at abandoning image ads if that would be a good compromise. But people have just got to stop whining. It gets us absolutely nowhere! |

Thank-you Yodaminch for replying with some answers/speculations. It is by telling users the reasons behind these sort of occurrences, that people will voice fewer negative opinions. For instance, I personally, would voice less concern if I knew that the extra income would be set aside for specific new projects (such as the web hosting). However, we have to be told. Telling users things isn't such a bad thing. In fact, it's a great thing. It keeps user confidence in the future of a company. I could continue on that direction, but I feel that would lead this topic off the point at hand. I will gladly share my opinions with any IF Staff if they should want to hear them.  Locke

Well, I was going to continue in the direction of communication rather than ad placement, which is my I stopped. I will gladly tell any IF Staff member my opinions on communication if wanted. When it comes to the ads though, it's more a deal of the reasons behind it. You mentioned the search in the other topic open. Yes, it would be good sometimes on the SZ, but it would have been nice to know exactly what the extra funds were needed for / are going to be used for. Communication is good, like I could go on and on about. |
