On the US mirror page, you can download both the install and live CD iso files. You will probably need the ones for Intel x86. |

-still wonders what the huge differences are between the distros. They all look the same to me in screenshots, and SuSE wasn't that nice to use.

I'll try it. I just hope I don't break my computer... I think Seth can be blamed for the whole Ubuntu <-> InvisionFree thing. |

They all use the Linux kernel, so at the core they are all the same, HOWEVER you have three basic types of distros:
DEB distros, in the opinion of someone who's used both, are much easier to update and maintain. apt-get and Synaptic blow things like Yum and YaST out of the water. In fact, things like apt4rpm try to mimic the way a Debian child works while still using RPMs Source-based distros are the ultimate Linux h4x0r distro. Compile everything from source code. Gentoo uses emerge to make it easy to grab the sources you need. The basic differences are going to be in service and support, choice of primary window manager (Ubuntu uses Gnome, SuSE uses KDE), bundled applications, and "goodies" (SuSE has taken great pains to make sure Bluetooth is fully supported; Ubuntu has added lots of new-user-friendly things like disabling root) But in the end, it's all what you like. |

Whoa, I just came back from a HD crash and looked at this topic. I just installed Ubuntu as my first Linux earlier this week, and I was really shocked when I saw Seth's sig and avatar. Ubuntu really is great and as Seth said, things like Synaptic Package Manager (for installing thousands of software packages from the net easily) etc. really do make it a great OS to use. As for IE, it sucks! Being in the web design business I have to deal with hacks to make my lovely PNGs appear correctly in that horrible browser using all sorts of javascript hacks. I have already recommended Ubuntu to many of my friends and a lot of them downloaded the LiveCD 5 mins later! My Mac is dual-booted (in Ubuntu right now) and my PC is completely ubuntu native. Go get it! |
