Simply put, after years of endless security screwups from Microsoft, I simply don't have the necessary trust in them to run something that could screw up my system without my knowledge. With Opera, I have to admit to running it on faith, but Opera Software have never betrayed my trust. With Firefox, I can even find out exactly what the program is doing, with a little time and effort. In order to find out what IE is doing, I have to violate multiple EULAs and mess around with raw assembly code in a debugger (assuming the system even allows it). When Microsoft first "integrated" the browser to bypass their legal obligations, they introduced a plethora of security flaws that simply should never have existed. In the old days, people *laughed* at those emails that said "If you get an email titled GOOD TIMES, do not even read it because it's a virus", because what was proposed in the "warning" was impossible. The idea that you could have binary code run on your machine just from viewing a web page was likewise laughable. Microsoft turned all that upside down. Frankly, I don't feel they deserve our trust, and I don't believe the Avant Browser authors have any better an idea of what goes on inside that IE/HTML control than we do.
Good for you. I don't run a virus scanner, and I've only run adaware once every three months or for the last year, and I've never had a virus, trojan, or spyware in the last 20 years of computer usage (to be fair, not all of those twenty years were on Intel-compatible machines). However, my experience is not typical, and I can verify that fact by simply counting the number of machines I've had to clean up because the user DIDN'T do any of the things you mention. These people outnumber you by at least forty to one. Would they have had as much trouble if they were using a browser that wasn't IE? Absolutely not. Also I would like to point out that you could very well have had trojan software on your machine and not been aware of it, since they are stealthy by design and tools to scan for such software are both new and permanently playing catch-up.
This is true. However, looking at the nature of past Firefox vulnerabilities, there are two major themes: risk of losing personal data and downloading without permission. While both of these are of course very bad, they are also both present in IE, and there is a major theme missing that is present in IE: risk of code executing without permission. If someone exploits Firefox and downloads a trojan to your PC, you generally have to then go and execute it yourself before you're at risk. With IE, many vulnerabilities have cropped up that require no such intervention. I don't want my personal data stolen any more than the next person, but much worse than that is the nagging doubt that my system could be totally compromised and I'd never know about it. With alternative browsers, I feel pretty confident in the security of my system. With IE regularly having that class of vulnerability, I quickly lose all confidence. |

Firefox is the safest browser on the Internet. Absolutely nothing will change that. Internet Explorer has nothing but fake security catalogs that do nothing but take up space on your HD. I can remove all of these security catalogs, and still be as safe as I was with them. SP2 does nothing but block a few popups and mess up your computer. IE7 will only be able to XP/Longhorn (Which will also be messed up when it comes out) users, so Pre-XP users will have no choice but to switch to Firefox. What a shame, since the XP/Longhorn-Only deal just increased FF's population of users by a big shot. I bet IE7 will have nothing but an extra file added or two. Microsoft has always sucked, always will. I plan on getting a PowerMac G5 with Tiger (then download Firefox to go :)) to exit from the (Bill) GATES of Hell and be safe and secure. Avant is just IE with a different name, folks. So is Maxthon. Don't download it. |

Agreed, but then, it comes back down to "a computer is only as secure as the person admistering it".

If it's as secure as IE is, Firefox is far superior. End of story. Edit: If Avant screws up certain programs and Firefox doesn't, which is the safer? |
