By me at IF Resouce:
Quote:

Step1: Don't use abbreveations. Abbreveations show a lazy admin.

Step2: Don't have a catagory with only one or two things. Have atleast three items per catagagory.

Step3: Less staff equal good. Giving staff possions away is a good way to entice members at first, but later on it will come back to bite you. Less staff means a greater desire to become one. If it takes alot to be a staff member more members will want to be active, and good to show that they would be a good staff member. Not only does this keep users active, but it makes sure your staff are good quality.

Step4: Don't change posts counts to 1000 if you have 100 posts. If every now-and-then you give a few members 5 more posts to make them seem active that is ok, but people with a 1000+ post count when the boaronly has 150 posts looks bad.

Step5: [Removed: 'parently I am the only one who cares about grammar]

Step6: Don't be the only one posting. If it is just you the admin posting people keep seeing admins all over the place and they can feel over-whelmed.

Step7: Don't use alot of codes. They slow the board down and trun off experienced users.

You're rambling on about abbreviations and capitalization errors, and yet their entire explanation is full of spelling and grammar errors. No offense, of course, but that needs to be fixed. :(

I completely disagree with this. Setting up your board so that your members will want to be a staff member is totally immoral, and not very effective. Not only are you leading them on false hopes, but they are being active for all the wrong reasons.

These tips are all very basic, and a lot of them skewed, so I just don't like them overall, sorry. :/

Interesting post.

Step5: Capitilization. Nothing bugs most people more than un capotilized names. If someone has thier name un capitalized do the follwing:
ACP > Find/Edit/suspend Users > Find User > Change name to current name + a 's' then
ACP > Find/Edit/suspend Users > Find User > Change name back to normal with capitalization.

How many people will turn their nose up at a forum simply because members are lazy at capitalising their names? Maybe at an RP forum where the name is important but a username is simply that: a username. It holds little importance. I'd have thought admins who want to improve their forums have better things to do than capitilising names...especially since some people purposely don't capitalise their names. If you just do it without asking the user, it's a little rude just because you want everyone to be the same. :/ Some names look nicer without capitals.

Besides, what you said is untrue and isn't backed by any real proof or logic. :P

I can think of hundreds of other things that bug people more: downtime, bad members, annoying staff, admins being weird, bugs that occur, etc.

Why is making it so members want to become better a bad thing? If they are a truly good member it wont be false hopes, because they will be good enough to promote.

My spelling is atrosish I give you that, but my grammar is generally good. If not I was in a hurry at the end of it :/

No offense, but about half of this is un-true, and some of these steps depend on the forum.
