I disagree with 85% of it. Capitalization doesn't matter. If you aren't oNline alot you may need to get more staff early in the forum. Also I used to run a forum called Teen Beach and me and my members often use TB.

I know, but 5 admins and 10 mods on a forum of 25 is excessive.

I didn't mean that. I meant like turning Grpahic into gfx or to into 2.
Abbreviations that everyone uses are ok, but if the admin is posting: "So i lik wnt 2 the beach n stuf this wk" you got a problem.

So, a member is "better" if they are on the staff?

Sorry, but I disagree with that as well. Staff members are crucial, but regular members are just as important, as, without them, the board would not exist at all. As I said earlier, if you want to attract members to be on the staff, this will cause them to be active for all of the wrong reasons.

Being on the staff is a duty, not a privelage.

Wait your twisting my words. I said if they are a good member than they could be promoted to staff not only staff are good members.

"Why is making it so that members want to become better a bad thing?"

I'm sorry if I've misinterpreted you, but I'm not twisting anything, :/ or at least I'm not trying to.

"If they are a truly good member it wont be false hopes, because they will be good enough to promote."

Yes, but there will be hundreds of good members out there, and you cannot possibly promote them all, so there is bound to be major disappointment somewhere down the line. :(

I meant having them strive for a better possision and learning things ect....

If you have 100+ good and active members you don't need any guide :P.

Ah, I see what you were trying to say now. My apologies for jumping to conclusions, it's just that so many people draw in their members with staff opportunities, and it's a practice I don't particularly agree with.

Same here. Like "Get 100 posts and be a admin!!111!!!" That is just stupid :/

I dont really agree with some of those suggestions:

1: Abbreviations when used in the right instance can show a good, natural understanding of a specific topic which the forum is covering. For example, it is better to type IPB, than Invision Power Board, which just seems a little overdone and pretty obvious. Of course when you are abbreviating words which dont quite make sense, for example, abbreviating your site name, lets take Super Cool Gaming Forum Online!!, to SCGF, just looks stupid.

2: I find that having a prelimary catergory with just two contained forums help draw the visitors towards this area, which is of course what you want. In this catergory i have a News and Announcements forum, and a Feedback and Comments forum, this ensures that my forum is getting a high amount of user feedback which is always valued and that regular news and announcements are being viewed ensuring members get to grips with new updates and what the forums are all about. If this catergory was filled with more general forums then the attention would have been drawn away slightly. I will agree however that having one forum per catergory is just unneccessary.

3: I agree with you on this point, that having a small forum with a percentage of members with staff powers anything higher than 25% is just irregular and not needed. Of course make sure to expand your forums in coordination with the sites growth overall, as having thousands of normal members and little staff members will result in an eventual overhaul of your rules and regulations.

4: I havent really heard of forums doing this, sort of like saying, dont type out your forum descriptions in Japanese if your an English speaking and reading forum O_o Giving out free "post boosts" are quite a good way to ensure higher member participation in forumwide competitions though.

5: --------

6: A good way to ensure that if your forums are inactive and you are the only one posting, is to do something quite naughty, as long as you dont get caught out of course. And create a couple of duplicate members and participate in a couple of helpful conversations to get forum discussions running. I dont think that having an active administrator constitutes to members being overwelhmed, it is often nice to see forum founders active shows that they care. If a member has some pre-illusion that all administrators are evil and cannot wait to use their powers then mabye it is best for that particular member to not return.

7: For remotely hosted forums such as InvisionFree this is certainly the case, since modifications are firmly based off additional javascript thrown into the Header and the Footer. But for paid forum software such as IPB, and vB having modifications will not effect the loading of pages and uptime since the codes are literally apart of the software, so there is nothing additional to load. And besides a couple of modifications are always good to help ensure that your forums are attracting a unique memberbase and it gives you another reason to entice members to join your forums.

I'd say that even 25% is way over the top.

I'm against giving pot boosts as prizes, since it encourages members to be active for post count, which isn't what yu want, as it can lead to spam and other problems.

I've never done this, as it is extremely embarrassing if one of your members figures out, and if discovered could draw attention away from the forum instead of towards it. It is very hard for forums to find some place to start, true, since no one wants to join with just one member, but there are other ways, such as starting up the site with one or two partners, or inviting a bunch of friends over at the start. I don't think I'll ever be using this method of getting members, although I don't outspokenly disagree with it, since I know how frustrating it is to try to get members.
