How did you get your boards so active?

I think you have a nice theme going there.I would just keep posting and leaving links on other boards(that allow it) that have the same interest as yours.I would also set up a forum where other boards can leave a link to their board and post a note that to do so they need to post a link to your board on theirs. It does take time to get an active board going and lots of hard work. You might also run a contest such as a posting contest with a prize to the member who posts the most.Plan it ahead of time and incorporate that into the links you leave elsewhere.Good luck :P

Well for getting members, I registered with loads of search engines and registered on Top Sites, as well as other Harry Potter forums. Although check the rules of any forums you are about to advertise your site on. Usually Admins are okay about you putting a link to your site in your signature.

The thing is, these methods are getting me members but apart from the friend I knew from before, no one is posting in the on topic threads yet.

How do you register with a search engine ?

my forum has lots of activity in the afternoon. we rarely advertise and we have a lot of members and lots of posts. the board isnt very old. if you want a lot of members, be sure not to make the entire board based on one thing. add some other forums.

examples: off topic, graphics, entertainment (movies, tv, music), and others.

This is where I got all my information on Meta Tags and Search Engines here. I hope it works for you. :)

LMAO!! If I didn't love my site so much and was able to see Seth's reaction before he banned me - that would actually be worth a laugh!!

I must be getting old - I hardly understood any of it. :ermm:

If you want to try it, go right ahead. I don't suggest it, and such messages never help. They are an annoyance, and sending a PM to anyone else they ask for a link is a huge annoyance. Try not to approach people when advertising, try to let them come to you. For example, don't PM people with a link to your forum. Rather, give them a reason to find your forum. Targeting an audience makes this much easier. For example, if you have a Harry Potter forum, then go to a forum with a large number Harry Potter fans and see if you can post a link without advertising. Sounding proffesional and appealing is key.

Also, affiliates (when one forum links to your forum and you link back) works very well. Partnerships, where both sides benefit when well thought out result in great success.

If you go to a search engine, then you should be able to find a way. You can do it for Google right here. Don't stop there. Try submitting your site to directories, top sites ect/ Having a link available really helps, even if its not on a place as popular as google. And remember, results take time. Never think that doing nothing will bring you members over time, but if you are constantly doing things to promote your site then over time the member registrations will increase.

Easy, to make specialized forums active is you've always got to offer more appealing things than all your competition. But if you really want a head start stort your forum building on another forum. Like let's say you wanted to build a Gfx forum. A good way is to go to a large gfx forum and develop a really good rep and gain lots of respect that way when you are ready to open your doors you already have a score of devoted members. Works for me.

Submit to Google, it's free.

http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

there, submit it there. No payment, just click and have meta tags. oh meta tags.

and Ole' Dynamix's guide should help you.

To get heaps of members on your board i would advise you to advertise it in...
Yahoo

So do you mean you paid for advertising? Or you submitted to their search engine for free? I didn't know you could pay to advertise on google etc.

Oh btw happy belated birthday :D

You can, just as you cna purchase to have ads on your site hosted by Google, you can have your site as an advertisement on Google as well, as well as other Search Engines.

If you want your forum to stay active, give the members a reason to come back. make sure it's appealing to them.

I find it very hard to get members myself. Since August or September I have lost so many active posters. The board got negligeted due to other commitments. Though my co-admin who I think is friendly doesn't bother or doesn't want to help me or listen to me. He'd rather that I'd leave the board be and do nothing, to get members. I am not about to leave a board that looks negligeted.
