How did you get your boards so active?

The problem with getting members is that IF provides free forums in a few seconds, so it is hard for someone to be compelled to join a board, when they could just go off and create one themselves. Why be member when you can be admin? This can make it somewhat frustrating to get members.

Pris that is a very good thought. I've never really thought of it that way. Maybe try absorbing/Merging with other boards your size so everyone can stay alive. Mergers on IF are a little bit difficult but only if you want to keep inactive members and post that you can make back... So everyone can stay alive and you have an active site that is actual competition to bigger boards in your genre... It's just like Duelist Underground dominated the YGO Genre of IF because instead of forming into one all the little sites wanted to remain little and DU just crushed them under it's weight... I just got another brilliant idea be looking for my name in a few days..

I have used the tutorials on this forum: added the site to search engines, used meta tags and advertised a lot on guitar fora

Pretty simple answer:

1. Site/forums must contain something members need/want.
2. Make a site.. laziness doesn't make an active forum. Members want to be assured that the webmaster isn't lazy and that the forums will go someplace before they join. Making a website is often proof that the webmaster is professional at what he does.

Reason for IF's success: Duffmans unique way re-distributing IPB 1.3 Final under Invisions dislikes on legal grounds has made it easy for people to have a forum with hosting. It's something people want and possibly need depending on their wallet and tastes for forums.

Reason for IFSZ's success: An add-on to Duffmans idea.. people will need skinning support/forum skins. That simple... They'd probly have even more members if they didn't act like a minor skin copyright is more important then the actual forums ideas(placing the copyright above the banner).

Note: Advertising is only icing, if you make your boards properly with something members become attracted to with a website then search engines will do the advertisement for you.

It's a pretty logical philosphic basic.

As most people here have already said, search engines help quite a bit. I have a Harry Potter board, and I've also entered it in some Top Sites, and that has drawn in quite a few members.

A while ago, one of my members purchased a bunch of impressions on another full Harry Potter site, and that attracted about 100 members to our board in just a week.

We offer House Points and an increase in post count for members who wear our banner in their signature on other boards they're part of - or when they introduce a new member to our board.

The other admins and I are constantly thinking up of new ideas and ways for the members to feel as if they're not only members, but also contributing in a way. I change the skin once in a while - and I search for new codes that I think my members would like. We try to offer features that may not be available on other Harry Potter RPG forums. We have a well-organized sidebar (although a bunch of other HP forums have that now too), and even though it IS an RPG board, I try to place in news and updates of the movies/books as well.

As Zero has mentioned, you can't be lazy. You can't sit there and expect members to just flock in.

That is a pretty good idea, if you happen to find another board with a similar subject and a need of members. Be careful, though, and make sure that you trust the co-admin you want to work with 100%.

Twilight is upon me, and soon night must fall.

I tried mergers. Though I never really shut mine down. It can be very hard working with another person. Sharing a board can cause a lot of trouble, from layouts, to members, punishment, hiring other staff. Forget being demoted, just trying to work with another person can be a problem.

As it is, my board is just now starting to get active with its 122 members. Its been around for 3? years now. I've been in all major search engines, affiliated with big boards, etc. And nothing worked. Sometimes its just the subject matter or people that determine how well a board will do.

my board always has a couple of guests who just stay there for an hour or two then leave. i kinda wish that those guests who stick in my forums for two hours would join.

additional remark regarding the search engines: I've been advertising quite a lot on guitar forums, now all those ads are shown when I google for "Joe Satriani Forum" and exactly the LAST result is the actual address to my forum... not so lol
