That's why I never get PMs about it, except for the one (and only) I received in the first week we opened but I decided to ensure it didn't happen again so I banned him, publicly humiliated him and then asked if anyone else fancied to bug me.  Interesting that people have learnt not to hassle me.  Then again, I'm not a Community Admin, but rather I deal with bans and schtuff. I know the boss gets hassled but he just ignores them or points out if they ask then they get struck off the list of 'maybes' permanently. I'd say we have a mix of members who read the rules (yeah, they are rare but they do exist! :w00t:), people who've read the topic where I humiliated the guy and people who just don't want to ask/be on the team. Sometimes the odd muppet will slip in 'I wanna be on the team' into the topic in tiny writing but I edit it and have myself some fun so they learn. 
I'd honestly say those are poor reasons for being a moderator. :/ Then again we choose our moderators rather than bother making people work for it. Attitude, capability and maturity are important I'd say. Anyone can do the above just to get the job and then turn into a complete turnip. And have as we learned.  That's why I loathe the idea of saying 'become a moderator by doing this...' or 'join our staff just by asking here!' because it encourages people to do what is asked of them and therefore not natural which can be thrown back in your face at any point after they are upgraded. We just watch our members, if someone catches our eye we keep a close eye on them. The list above is perhaps worthy of some sort of recognition like Elite or whatever, but it's a silly reason to make someone a mod because anyone with time on their hand can do them just to please you. Remember, moderators are there to look after your forum and often they carry a part of your reputation. Bad mods say a lot about a forum and it's owners.

Like Jay said those are bad reasons for becoming a staff. I do all of those every single day at this board. Ok wait bad example. Most of the people at this board that are banned meet thoose requirments, and no banned person from this site deservise to have a staff position. :ph34r: The thought of ever being watched at is scary. Unless it is a girl then it is ok

Just putting in my two pence worth here........ People asking for admin positions - I would never make anyone an admin that I didn't know very well. People looking to be a Mod - depends if I was recruiting and they were good enough. I would never ban someone just because they asked to be a Mod or Admin, that is just plain mean. It shows they are keen on your site and can use their initative if they asked you. Instead of being mean, feel a bit flattered - unless they are the raving loonies that sign up, ask then try to delete your board. I would also get to know someone in MSN before I offered them a mod position. You are giving them a role that requires maturity, responsiblity and you need to trust them. As well as knowing you can rely on them to make good, informed posts. I have been an admin on one site and a mod on two others and no I didn't ask for any of them but I don't think its nice to humilate or intimidate someone because they had the guts to ask.

I don't have that problem because my boards are very small  . The only members I have are friends from another small board that I invited over. If someone asked, though . . . it'd depend on the person and situation. If I was having trouble finding the time to keep track of goings-on and it was someone whose judgement I trusted, I might make them a mod. As for Admin, though . . . it'd have to be someone I trust implicitly. But if someone just joined and asked - or was obviously not at all qualified - I'd say no. If they kept bothering me, I'd start with a warning and keep ramping up the punishment as they upped the ante with further requests. |

My 2 pence: I used to run a phpbb forum for about a year and a half and when I sold that to start a new one, some members asked to be mods before I even registered with invisionfree... As for Admins, I would only make someone Admin who I know and met in real life as well just in case he/she buggers it up I can go round and smack'em with a wet fish

You know sometimes the only way to get the position IS to ask. In another forum where I was a member for over a year (yes, diffrent then being a newbie and asking, though I have done that), I simply asked a mod friend of mine if I could 'somehow' get a position and next thing I know I was elevated. Turns out they had been looking for new mods and weren't going to consider me because they thought I didn't want it. I often offer moderation help when I notice an Admin struggling, weither I'm new or not. I've been enjoy various moderation and administration roles for varying sizes of groups (largest was 13,000 members...ugh) for eight years so I do have skill and talent to back up my request. Although I'm a special case  , I wouldn't rule out everyone who asks, because you never know when you might find your dream moderator...or, such as in my case, the mod to take over the duties you hate (my specialty is member management...I enjoy yelling at idiots).

lol i havnt got 1 pm about this but over 50 posts i finally set up a multi mod for it it post a image that says you ask to be u wont be and they shut up after seeign it 5 times |

Hmmm. No one asks meh... they always ask the mods... (as if they can GIVE out admin powers)><. Then they send the requests to me and i deny :angel: if they ask they don't get. |

That happens to me sometimes, they PM me a message saying "can I be a mod plz?" and they only have been a member for 2 days and have 4 posts. I don't respond because they really don't deserve an answer for such a stupid question. B) |

Well, there was once a guy on my forum, who is kind of an enemy of mine... I guess. Anyway, he would always ask to be a mod or admin on another board I'm an admin on. So guess what he did on my board? Yeah... I just told him not to ask again. Later he got banned for other reasons.. >_< |

On my IF forum there are usually mature people, they do not ask me for additional permissions unless they really need them and honestly I value it very much, since I manage many Internet communities, and yes, people are asking to be moderators/operators - I am usually ignoring it, if a person is active and seems to be more resonable I am giving a link to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moderator_(communications). I suppose a good way to become a mod without asking them is to find bad posts and report them to a mod/admin a lot of the time. If it keeps up they might ask YOU if you want to be a mod. Worked for me. Edit: Has anyone ever bugged the staff here to become a mod? |
